thered a final period rally by
lone to record a 36-30 win in
Junior High 8th grade boys
basketball action Thursday at
Heppner.
At one point, the Ponies held
a 16 point advantage in the
second half but the Cards
came back to close the gap to
six points by the buzzer.
Leading the Ponies was
Doug Holland with 12 points
and nine rebounds. Mark
Launer tossed in six points
and pulled seven boards while
Dorian Forrar racked up eight
points and three rebounds.
Also contributing to the win
ning effort was Rick Klaus'
five points and a five rebound
performance by Don Lott.
For the Cards, John Murray
was high point man with 15
followed by Denny Starr with
six, Roger Morter with four,
Craig Hams with three and
Craig Gutierrez with a pair.
Heppner ruled the boards as
they hauled in 37 rebounds to

boys team overcame a four
point halftime lead held by
lone to post a 23-18 win over
the Cards Thursday.
The win evened the Ponies
season record at 2-2.
Mike Currin led all scorers
with 14 points and Andy
Samples added four points to
the winning margin as 12
Ponies saw action in the
game.

Michelle LaRue tossed in
ten points and Mary Kincaid
added seven to lead the lone
Jr. High 8th grade girls team
to a 35-25 win over Heppner
Thursday.
The junior Cards recorded
the win, their fourth of the
year against no losses, despite
the fact that three of the girls
were carrying four fouls in the
final quarter. The game was
tied 12-12 at halftime but it
was Ione's full court zone
press that kept the Ponies off
balance and out of scoring
position for the rest of the
game.
Darcie Holloman totaled 14
points and Sandra Ward
scored six for the Ponies.

Traveling to Ukiah for the
tail end of a home and away
series with the Cougars, the
lone varsity girls ran into
some size problems the op
ponents were big and the court
was small and the result was
a 33-26 defeat for the Cards.
Using three girls in the 5'11"
range, Ukiah controlled the
boards in the contest, taking a
30-20 edge in that department.
The Cards were also troubled
by the smaller than regulation
court at the Ukiah gym. lone
got off to a slow start in the

Lindstrom with two points
each.

notched three points but the
Cards roared back in the
City League Action
Twelve points by Dave McLaughlin and eight by both
Jim Lankford and Carl Harrison paced Eckman to a 39-33
win over Greenup in Sunday's first game of city basketball
action. Charlie Sumner's seven points topped a balanced
scoring attack by the losers. '
In the closest 'game of the evening, Karmon Bjella
popped for 14 points and Gary Watkins added 13 to lead
Watkins over Galbraith 56-55. Chuck Ernst scored 16 and both
Mike Schwartz and Bob Krein had 14 for Galbraith.
Thirteen points by Tom Day and nine by both Tom Pointer
and Marvin Lane helped Summers come from behind to beat
VanMarter 52-42. LaVern VanMarter scored 14 points for his
team and Bill Kolb added 10.

Everybody got into the act
Friday as the lone junior
varsity rolled to a 62-25 win
over Ukiah in a game that was
never close.
The Cards led by a 16-2
margin after the first quarter
and all 12 members of he team
saw at least two periods of
action. lone threw up 88 shots
in the game and although they
hit only 25 of them for 29 per
cent, it was more than enough.
Mark Patton and Ralph
Morter both scored 12 points
and Greg Rietmann added
nine for lone. Tim Holtz was
the leading rebounder with
nine and Morter collected five
boards.
lone outrebounded the Cou
gars 38 to 30 and committed 17
turnovers to 29 for Ukiah.
The result the next night
was much the same as the
Cards picked up another win

Meyers said the team had
practiced several times dur
ing the week in the smaller
grade school gym to prepare
for the game on Ukiah's
undersized court. The prepar
ation paid off as the Cards
notched their second win of
the year against four setbacks.

Leading from start to finish
and controlling the game in all
departments, the lone Cardi
nals posted their first win of
the season, 53-29 over Ukiah
Friday at lone.
Only in the third period did
, the visiting Cougars reach
double figures with 11 as they
were held to four, eight and six
points in the remaining quar
ters. The Cards jumped to a
14-4 lead and the margin never
diminished the rest of the way.
Robin LaRue hit 10 of 19
shots including 6 of 8 in the
second half to total 21 points
and lead all scorers. Dennis
Stefani added 11 for lone.
For one of the few times this
year, the Cards out rebounded
their opponents, collecting 33
boards to Ukiah's 22. LaRue
grabbed eight followed by
Kevin McCabe with six.
. In team percentages, lone
shot 36 per ce'nt 23 of 64 from
the floor while the Cougars
were 14 of 44 for 32 per cent,
lone hit an impressive 71 per
cent from the line, canning
five of seven attempts while
Ukiah got one point from four

fourth quarter by racking up
eight points.

was Dennis Stefani with 17,
Robin LaRue with 16 and
Danny McElligott with 12.

the lack of penetration hurt his
team but he added that they
showed good composure to
wards the end of the game by
keeping control of the ball and
converting free throws.
