Mustangs gain split at
White Salmon Tourney
First loss to Stevenson 75-41
Heppner found the going
tougher and the players taller
, when they crossed the border
for holiday tournament bas
ketball action at the White
Salmon Tournament last
week. The Mustangs were
given a rude introduction to
Washington basketball as Ste
venson slapped the Mustangs
with their first loss of the
season, 75-41.
The Mustangs found them
selves up against an impres
sive lineup featuring 6'7"
Steve Hamilton and three of
his team mates who all stood
in the 6'4" range. And not only
were they tall, but they also
knew what to do with the
basketball Stevenson shot a
hot 48 per cent from the floor
and 70 per cent from the line.
Despite their height disad
vantage, Heppner stayed
close to the eventual tourna
ment champs through the first
quarter and took a brief lead
early in the second period. But
from there, the taller team
took control of the game,
leading by 10 at intermission
and holding a 19 point edge
after three periods.
Bryan Marlin led the Mus
tangs with 15 points and
Dennis Peck added eight. As a
team, Heppner managed only
a 27 per cent shooting per
formance from the floor. The
locals faired better under the
boards grabbing 27 rebounds
to 36 for Stevenson. Jerry
Cutsforth was Heppner's top
rebounder with seven while
Marlin was second with four.
"We played a good first
quarter and held our own
pretty well," said Mustang
coach Tom Day. "But then we
let their height intimidate us."
Day credited Dale Holland
with a good defensive per
formance in holding Hamil
ton, last year's tourney MVP,
to 14 points and four rebounds.
Hamilton had been scoring at
a 25 point clip coming into the
game.
'Stangs roll over
Lyle by 60-48
A strong defensive effort in
the final period helped Hepp
ner break open a close game
and post a 60-48 win over Lyle
in second day action of the
White Salmon Tournament
last week. j
The Mustangs led through
out most of the game, holding
a four point advantage after
the opening period, a two point
lead at halftime and a four
point cushion after three
quarters. The win came on the
heels of a 75-41 defeat at the
hands of Stevenson and boos-

This preview of the remaining teams in
the CBC East concludes the G-T's look
at upcoming conference opponents for
the Mustangs.
PILOT ROCK
Don't pay much attention to Pilot Rock's slow start
this basketball season. Come January, when Columbia
Basin Conference play begins, the Rockets, the
defending East champions, will have to be reckoned
with.
Five lettermen are back from last year's 9-3, 13-9,
club, with the biggest letterman being 6 5 junior center
Jeff Lavender. A first team all-conference pick last
year, Lavender led the CBC in scoring (21.7); was fourth
in rebounding (11.7); first in field goal shooting (59 per
cent) and second in free throw shooting (83 per cent).
"He's a well rounded basketball player," understated
Drake Davis, the Rockets' coach. One of the many
things Lavender does well on the basketball court is
handle the ball, Davis pointed out On some occasions,
when they are facing a press, the Rockets rely on
Lavender to bring the ball up the floor. At 6-5, he's the
CBC's biggest guard.
Other lettermen back include: Richard Christensen, a
6-1 senior forward; Dave Connor, a 5-9 senior guard;
Will Barber, a 5-8 junior guard, and Tim Rasmussen, a
5- 11 guard.
Wes Harrison, a 6-1 junior forward; Mike Carnes, a
6- 1 senior forward; Jim Reger, a 5-10 senior guard;
Rusty Britt, a 5-10 senior guard, and Jim Post, a 6-1
sophomore center-forward, are also on the Pilot Rock
roster this season.
The Rockets, who ran a control type game last
season, will "run more than we have in the past" this
season, said Davis. Defensively, Pilot Rock will use both
a man-to-man and zone. Last year the Rockets were the
top defensive club in the CBC, allowing only 47 points
per outing. s
WESTON-McEWEN
Any team with nine lettermen back and seven of
them seniors has to be tough. And in a word, the
Tiger-Scots of Weston-McEwen will be exactly
that tough when CBC play kicks off the first
weekend in January.
First year coach Rick Jaggers has a gold mine of
experience on his club. Last year the Tiger-Scots were
8-4, 16-6.
His first year at Weston-McEwen should be fun if
Mike Lieuallen, a 5-9 senior guard; Leland Jones, a 5-8
senior guard; Doug Warner, a 6-1 senior guard; Cary
Rahn, a 6 2 senior post; Kim Sams, a 5-8 senior guard;
Jerry Baker, a 6-2 senior post; Jim Barnett, a 5-11
senior guard; Brandt Bannister, a 5-9 junior guard, and
Frank Webb, a 6-0 junior post, have anything to say
about it.
They are all lettermen. Of the lot, Warner is the best.
He averaged 16.7 points per CBC game last year.
Other players on the Tiger-Scot roster include: Jerry
Miguez, a 6-3 junior post; Bill Meek, a 5-9 junior guard,
and Ken Devereaux, a 6-0 sophomore guard.
Weston-McEwen will field a small team this year and
according to Jaggers the Tiger-Scots hope to do a lot of
running on offense. They will also be a pass-oriented
team. Defensively, Weston-McEwen will utilize a
man-to-man, half court trap and press.
Even though they are small, the Tiger-Scots, so far
this season, are outrebounding their opponents.
In the West, Jaggers sees Sherman County as the
team to beat. In the East, you got to beat Lavender and
Pilot Rock, he said. "It's Lavender who you've got to
beat," Jaggers commented. "You get him on the bench
and they're in big, big trouble."
Conference play gears up
