WASCO COUNTY
"We'll be small this year but that's nothing new for
us," said second year Wasco County coach Darce
Driskel.
Last year Wasco finished second in the western half
of the conference with an 8-3 record (16 6 overall)
despite the fact that the tallest player was only 6-1. This
year Wasco's roster lists one member at 6-1 and another
at 6-L
To compensate for the lack of height, Driskel said the
team will rely on "quite a bit of quickness."
"We'll do a lot of half court stunting and keep the
pressure on," Driskel said. "If our shooting matched our
quickness we would be all set."
Lettermen returning from last year are senior Tim
Puckett (5 10), senior Tony Morelli (5-11) and senior
Charlie Henry (5-4). Puckett has led the team in scoring
with a 13 point average so far. Morelli will be out of the
lineup with an injury until January and Driskel said his
return should result in a big improvement.
Rebounding power will come from Puckett, who
pulled 10 boards per game last year, junior Don
Heideman, sophomore Danny Keillor and freshman
Randy Snodgrass. Henry and Keillor look to be the
team's best defenders.
With one freshman and three sophomores on the
squad, experience could be a problem for Wasco. Last
year Driskel mainly used six players and four of them
were seniors.

"We've been pretty inconsistent so far this year (3-4
record) but if we can get our act together, I think we can
really play a spoiler's role this year," Driskel said.
CONDON
The Condon Blue Devils have a new coach this season
with a very familiar face. He's Keith Morgan, a Blue
Devil player of a few years past.
Condon finished last in the western division of the
CBC last year with a 2-9 record, but Morgan has some
reasons to be optimistic. Mainly senior forward Max
Mcintosh (6-1), the team's leading scorer this season
(19-0); senior forward Steve Campbell (6-0) who is
hitting for 11 points per contest and senior forward
Brian Shaffer (6-0), one of the team's leading
rebounders.
Five lettermen are back and Morgan has a roster
which includes eight seniors, three juniors and one
sophomore. Condon lost six players to graduation.
The Blue Devils are currently 3-4. "We're still kind of
sluggish so far but we've shown some sparks of what I
think we can do," said Morgan.
What the Blue Devils do best is run. "We're going to
run as much as possible to take advantage of the team's
overall quickness," Morgan pointed out.
Defensively, the Blue Devils have abandoned its
man-to-man and gone to a zone.
Mark Griffith, a 5-10 junior, and Jeff Harris, a 5-10
senior, are defensive standouts.
For height, Morgan can go to 6-3 senior Robert
Jaeger.
Morgan said his team is going to play basically the
same way as he played under longtime Blue Devil coach
Ted Schadewitz.
"Before the year is over," Morgan predicts, "the
teams in this league will know who we are."
SHERMAN COUNTY
- A trip to the state football finals got Sherman County
off to a late start on the basketball court this year, but
the Huskies have been making up for lost time with five
straight wins against no defeats.
Although coach Larry Parsons has only three
returning lettermen from last year's conference
champion squad, he calls this year's squad a "mature
bunch of players with good overall strength." Parsons is
in his first season at the Sherman County helm after
two years as head coach at Weston-McEwen.
The Huskies were 11-0 in the west division last year.
Anchoring the Husky lineup will be the three
returnees Senior Dave Simantel (5-10), senior Jim
MacNab (6 0) and junior Eric Kalista (6-3). Parsons lists
six seniors, five juniors and one sophomore on his
12-man roster.
Height should be no problem for Sherman County
since four of the players are 62" or taller and Parsons
said all three of his 6'3" players are potential starters.
The Huskies have been averaging 45-50 rebounds per
game this year well ahead of each opponent
Defensively, Sherman County is paced by Craig
Lohrey, a 5-10 senior who Parsons calls the team's best
defender. Kevin Kaseberg, a 5-10 junior, is also
expected to bolster the Husky defense.
At the other end. Parsons said he runs a double post
offense and prefers a controlled fast break. His team is
shooting 40 per cent from the floor on the year.
"We like to run but we still need the discipline to run
our set offense when we need it," Parsons said.
