Free-throw shooters in the annual Elks Free-throw Contest put all their thoughts and efforts
behind each toss. There are no easy winners, but lots of fun in trying.
Those free throws just don't come
too easy in this league
Sometimes it helps to clamp down a little harder on the
tongue. Others try to zero in with a hardline eye squint.
Some like the two hand set, the overhand pitch or the
underhand knuckler. The basic launch in the general
direction is also common.
When you're 4'2" and standing at the foul line, the basket
might as well be hanging on the ceiling.
Still, a bunch of youngsters showed up recently at the
Heppner and lone gyms to try their luck in the annual Elks
Free Throw Shooting Contest. Results from the two schools
were compiled and winners were named in six categories.
Fish and Wildlife Dept. compiling
new emergency hunt rosters
The Fish and Wildlife De
partment will begin compiling
new emergency hunt rosters,
one for each county in Oregon,
beginning January 1, 1978. The
lists will be effective through
June 30, 1979.
Any Oregon citizen over 18
years of age may apply for the
emergency hunt list for one
county where he would be
interested in hunting if an
emergency season should be
declared. The county does not
need to be the applicant's
county of residence.
Names of applicants are
kept in a card file in the order
received beginning January
1. No applications received
before January 1 will be
placed in the file but anyone
who may have applied early
can apply again after January
1.
Application should be made
on a postcard or other
similar-sized card, not by
letter. The words EMERGEN
CY HUNT should appear
across the top of the card and
the applicant should print his
name, address, daytime tele
phone number, and the name
of the county.
Only one card per person
can be accepted but if several
people wish to apply as a
group, they can by stapling
their cards together or enclos
ing them in an envelope.

mailed to the Fish and Wildlife
Department, P.O. Box 3503,
Portland, Oregon 97208.

real hawkeyes.
Local winners in the 25-shot contest included: Boys: 8-9,
Kenny Snider; 10-11, Dave Green; 12-13, Mike Walsingham.
Snider canned nine shots, Green hit 13 and three-time winner
Walsingham nailed 21.
Girls:. 8-9, Jeanne Connor; 10-11, Wanda Riley; 12-13,
Michelle LaRue. Connor dropped through seven shots, Riley,
bagged eight and LaRue connected on 13.

1979 and future lists will be set
up on a mid-year to mid-year

less deer. No further hunts are
anticipated this year.
