7th grade Ponies
stop Condon 26-14

v In their third outing of the
season, Dec 10, the Heppner
Jr. High 7th grade boys teams
notched their first win, 26-14
over Condon. Mike Currin led
he Ponies with 10 points
followed by Andy Samples,
Jay Hayes and Marty Britt,
each with four points.
The Ponies opened the year
with a 59-25 loss at the hands of
Pilot Rock. Again Currin led
the way in the losing effort
wtth eight points while Billy
Smith tossed in five.
"'We took it on the chin in
that one," said coach Jerry
Deford.
The second game of the year
saw Riverside top the Ponies
by a 32-21 margin as Currin
scored nine and Samples and
Hayes each had four points.
Other members of the team
include Matt Barnes, Greg
Miles, Mike Johnson, Shawn
Gibson, Matt Clark, Monty
Hoilan, Shane Laughlin,
Casey Fargher, Duane Gar
rett, Charles Knopp, Charles
Parker, Tom Huston and
Wesley Marlatt.
PR defense shuts
down Heppner jv's
A six point third quarter and
23 turnovers spelled defeat for
the Heppner jv's as Pilot Rock
led throughout the game for a
51-43 win Monday.
Heppner was down by seven
points at the intermission but
got left behind in the third
period. Overall, the Mustangs
connected on only 15 of 50
shots from the floor and hit 13
of 34 free throw attempts.
Ron Wood topped the Hepp
ner scorers with 12 points
followed by Mike Stookey with
eight.
"They were the best defen
sive team we've faced this
year," said coach George
Koffler. "We took a lot of bad
shots and just made too many
turnovers."
Koffler said his team was
outrebounded "by about 20"
and didn't block out well under
the boards. He credited Darrel
Bigelow for displaying good
hustle in the game.

Heppner
Lady Cards come from behind
Ione's lady Cards outscored
Spray 18 to one in the fourth
quarter to post a 35-27 come
from behind victory Friday at
Spray.
The Cards were down by 10
points going into the final
period when they launched
their attack. lone was paced
by Grace McElligott with 10
points, Susan Thompson with
nine, Darcy Rea with eight
and both Michelle and Carol
McElligott with four points.
Thompson, Rea and Grace
McElligott all turned in strong
performances under the
boards.
"We're progressing," said
Card coach Martha Doherty.
"I was pleased about the way
we were able to come back
towards the end of the game."
Doherty said all the starters
played well and added that
Michelle McElligott did a good
job coming off the bench.
HHS jv's sink Cards
Ron Young tossed in 14
points and pulled 12 rebounds
to lead the Heppner jv's to a
43-33 win over lone Friday.
Lionel Wood added 11 points
while Shawn LaRue paced the
Cards with 13.
Heppner held a 31-16 lead
after three periods when lone
put on the pressure with a half
court press to close the gap to
10.
The Mustangs committed
only 17 fouls in the game with
just four coming in the first
half but Heppner couldn't
capitalize on their own trips to
the line as they missed 15 of 28
attempts.
Mustang coach George Kof
fler said his team played a
good game defensively "ex
cept in the fourth quarter".
"We tend to get a little
rattled when the pressure is
on," Koffler said.
