Neighborhood Center hub
of Christmas activity
Among the many tables at
the recent Artifactory, was
one stocked full of hand
crafted items ranging from
macrame owl hangers to pot
holders to colorful Christmas
decorations. The items were
made by senior citizens who
gather every Thursday at the
Heppner Neighborhood Center
to enjoy each others company
and to work on craft projects.
The seniors' group is spon
sored each month by a
different church, or service
organization which provides
coffee, refreshments and often
craft materials and new
project ideas. Pat Brindle,
Neighborhood Center direc
tor, said that a new schedule
of sponsors for next year is

in the Retired Senior Volun
teer Program storybook "Gol
den Yesterdays" will be
honored at an autographing
party, part of the group's
annual Christmas Potluck
dinner, Friday, December 16,
at 11 a.m. in the Pendleton
V.F.W. hall, 1221 S.E. Court
Place.
Copies are still available for
Christmas of the RSVP publi
cation which contains stories
by and about such Heppner
area folks as Catie Padberg,
Frances Mitchell, and Marion
Hayden.

tion interested in becoming a
part of the program should
contact her at the Center.
The proceeds from craft
items made by the 10 to 15
women who get together every
week go back into the self-supporting
program for scissors,
glue and materials not pro
vided by the sponsoring orga
nizations. Each person makes
one of every project for
herself and one to be sold at
the Artifactory, the summer
sidewalk sale or at the
Neighborhood Center.
Another project in which the
Center is currently involved is
getting together the ingredi
ents for the Christmas baskets
distributed to low income
precious first bathtub.

gives a hint of how she
impressed her boy friend.
Jessie Furlong conjures up
how it used to be "Cooking For
the Harvest Crew." The story
of the "Creamoline Horses" is
told by Gerald Swaggart.
Alena Anderson's "Fall Into
the Well" is also recounted.
These stories and others will
warm your heart as you read
of the "good old days".
Altogether there are 85 stories
in the book by senior citizens
of Umatilla and Morrow

curling and dressing dolls for
the baskets, needs volunteers
to help with the 30 odd dolls
she is getting ready for
Christmas.
In Santa's workshop, Hepp
ner brand, at the old library
building on Willow Street, the
Juvenile Advisory Committee
under the direction of Carolyn
Holt has been repairing toys
for the past few weeks.
Mrs. Brindle said that
donations of toys, money,
food or clothing . are still
needed and appreciated, and
can be dropped off at the
Neighborhood Center.
Counties. The book is a project
of the Retired Senior Volun
teer Program of Blue Moun
tain Community College. It
has attracted the attention of
people interested in preserv
ing tales of how things used to
be.
Other Heppner folks with
stories in the book are: Cleo
Van Winkle, Rachel Harnett,
John Canaday, Delia McCur
dy, Edna Lyons, and Gus and
Mary Nikander.

Library, and Neighborhood

wins state
wool contest
Lori Witt, Irrigon, won a trip
to Denver next month by
placing first in the Junior
Division state competition of
the Make It With Wool
Contest.
The state contest was held
Monday at the Portland Sher
aton with Miss Witt modeling
her beige jacket and pants
ensemble as she did at the
recent district competition in
Heppner.
The national contest in
Denver is scheduled for Jan.
18-20.

Transformer capacity increases
In the past two weeks, many
transformers in Heppner have
been changed to a larger size
unit to meet increasing higher
usage by the residential mem
bers, according to Columbia
Basin Electric Co-op officials.
During the past two years,
most of the transformers on
the CBEC system were num
bered and identified as to the
individual members served
off of each transformer. .This
information was placed in the
computer service the Cooper
ative utilizes, and transformer
load information was then
obtained. The transformer
loadand demand reports have
shown the need for many
transformer changes as the
