Birdine Know Your County Govern ment Day Scheduled for 4-H Members Thursday, December 29, all 4-H members in our county will have an opportunity to see county government at work, and meet all the county officials ! Special arrange ments are underway through cooperation of county judge, D.O. Nelson, to offer this opportunity to our 4-H'ers. Leaders will be notified when final plans are completed, in time for them to contact all their club members .This is the first time such a program has been offered for several years, and we encourage all leaders and members to participate! Carcass Contest Awards Just in time for Christmas, 4-H and FFA members re ceived checks for their ratings in the carcass contest at county fair! Members were honored at the recent Farm City dinner with top carcass award of $80 going to Mary Daly; $60 to Carol McElligott for second; $30 to Robert Richards, third; $20 to Grace McElligott, 4th; and $10 to Jo Lynn Daly for 5th place. The five had the top animals when they were butchered out. ..just what the consumer is looking for when they step up to the meat counter! Our congratu lations to each of the winners ! Other Busy Leaders We mentioned numbers of members in a few 4-H clubs a short time ago, and now we discover others with , extra large clubs. Roberta Klaus, Heppner, another leader who just can't say "no" when a new member wants to join, now numbers 18 members in 78 tax guide available The 1978 edition of the Farmer's Tax Guide is now available at the Morrow County Extension office, ac cording to Harold Kerr, Coun ty Extension agent. "The Guide explains how tax laws apply to farming situations and has examples and illustrations showing how different items should be reported," says Kerr. One significant change in regulations affects employer taxes. If farmer-employers meet either of two tests explained in the Guide, they will be required to pay federal unemployment taxes. The Guide discusses how to com pute and deposit the unem ployment tax. Copies of the Farmer's Tax Guide can be obtained at the Morrow County Extension office, Gilliam-Bisbee Bldg., Heppner, or by telephoning 676-9642. We surely admire leaders who are so dedicated! Style Show for Farm-City Day ..Cowbelles, Livestock Grow ers, and guests were treated to a really "up-town" style show during the afternoon break between meetings last Fri day! Styles were shown from Gardner's, Kroll's, Cole's and LeBush, along with a number of lovely fashions made by models. Fashions shown in cluded the latest holiday wear, both for a big night out, or evening at home, as well as all the other latest lookds for men, women, and children. And the great part about the whole show was.... all fashions are all available in our local stores, and were modeled by local people. Our thanks to all who cooperated in making the show possible, and a special thanks, to the older boys and men who modeled! It seems to take a little more courage for men to come out as models. High school boys modeling for Garnders were Ron Currin, Chris Zita, Terry Toll, Paul Carlson, and Jerry Cutsforth. The two men who shared the fashion spotlight were Terry Hager of Gazette-Times, and Mike Howell, former 4-H and livestock agent. Other models were: Lenna Smith, Vicki Wagonblast and kids, Sheridan Tarnasky and daughter, Vi Wilgers, Carolyn Cole, Francine Evans, Erin Evans, Belinda Powers, Judy Wright, Joan Hughes, Judy Buschke, Marie Lane, Margo Sherer, Joyce Hughes, Rita Sumner, Kimberly Kroll and Birdine Tullis. Two trackers The Two-Trackers 4-H Club had their Christmas party on Sunday, Dec. 11 at the barn. There was a contest for the best dressed horse. Pat Schwartz was the winner. We had some bareback games such as bareback package decorations, English and Western equitation, a dollar bill race and a ribbon race. Our leader gave each person a hat block for a Christmas present. Then we went in the dorm and had a gift exchange and refreshments. Twenty pnnle attended. See you all next Sunday at English riding. Paula Anderson received her first year pin November 11. We sewed our tote bags. We will finish our tote bags at our next meeting which will be December 2. Hollingsworth, 41, a Port land attorney, has been cam paigning full-time since April and for the past month he and his wife and two children have been traveling around the state in a motor home donated by supporters. "I've been shaking hands wherever I can find them," Hollingsworth said. The native-born Portlander considers himself much more conservative than Gov. Bob Straub, especially with re gards to government spending the death penalty and commu nity support. Hollingsworth admits that he doesn't know much about the problems of Eastern Library establishes memorial fund A memorial fund for long-time, Heppner librarian Blanche Brown has been established at the Heppner Library. The City of Heppner and several members of the library board have contributed money which will be used to buy books in memory of Mrs. Brown. Persons who would like to make contributions to this memorial may bring their gifts to the library, where they will be listed and added to the fund. Funeral services for Blanche Brown were held at Heppner's All Saints Episcopal Church November 23, and the library-museum was closed that day in her memory.
