The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Tuesday
approved two special controlled hunts one in the Fossil area
of the Wheeler unit and one in the Heppner Game Control
District.
Both hunts will be held Dec. 17-21 with special tags issued
by the Commission on a first come-first serve basis. For the
Fossil hunt, 600 special tags will be issued and 500 will be
distributed for the Heppner hunt.
The Commission will not use the emergency hunt roster
in these cases and to be eligible, applicants must have an
unused buck tag or a controlled hunt tag.
Applications must be made on special controlled hunt
forms available at licensing agents. Applicants must enter
either "Fossil" or "Heppner" on the form and include their
hunting license number and unused tag number on the form.
Completed applications should be sent to the Oregon Dept.
pf Fish and Wildlife Box 3503 Portland, OR 98208, as soon as
possible.
The hunt is for anterless deer only and successful
applicants are eligible to take two deer one on the unused
buck tag and one on the special hunt tag.
Range conditions, poor herd conditions in the
agricultural areas and damage due to foraging deer were
named as reasons for the special hunt.
Koffler directs JVs

for the Mustang junior varsity
basketball team but after four
games in the next week, the
season perspective should be
quite a bit clearer.
"These first games should
tell us a lot about where we're
going this year," said George
Koffler, in his first year at the
jv roiindball helm. "Right now
there are a lot of variables."
Koffler is in the process of
inducting his 11-man squad
into a new offensive set up
which, he said, operates
around three basic plays with
about four options off of each
one. Koffler plans to stick with
a man-to-man offensive and
will also play man-to-man
defense "about 90 Der cent of
the time". i .. ,
The junior Mustangs will
have their first chance to try
out the system today (Thurs
day) against the visiting lone
Cards.
"We've got good height for a
jv team, we're not bad
speed-wise and I think we'll
hang in with our rebounding,"
Koffler said, adding that
outside shooting doesn't ap
pear to be one of his team's
fortes.
Koffler is looking to his
three transfer players to
contribute some help to the

The team has patterned its
offense after the varsity
system and Meyers said he
will adapt his defensive stra
tegy to fit his style of players.

Day seeks aggressive
Heppner varsity coach Tom
Day held his first inter-squad
scrimmage of the year Tues
day evening in preparation for
the Mustang season opener
Friday at lone.
Day is taking a closer look
at his players before deciding
on a lineup and competition
among the 11 squad members
is still close for inclusion in the
starting five.
Aggressive play in the
scrimmage was to be an
important factor in deciding
who gets the starting nod, Day
said early Tuesday.
"I don't want the players to
have to force their actions but
tight, aggressive play is what
I'm looking for," Day said.
"Playing aggressively while
still maintaining poise is the
type of play I want."

Del LaRue had narrowed his
choices down to seven players
to send out on the court in
Friday's home opener against
Heppner.
1 "We're a little behind sche
i dule," LaRue said. "The snow
hurt us and a few players have
been out of town or sick I
guess you could say we lost
almost a week of work."
LaRue has settled on a
backcourt starting duo of
Danny McElligott and Dennis
Stefani and said Kevin Mc
Cabe had nailed down one of
the forward spots. The other
two slots still remain open
with two seniors, 61" Rick
Gilbert and 6'0" Dennis
I Thompson vying for the post
and 6'0" junior John Lind
strom and 511" Robin LaRue
in the running for the other
forward. Rounding out the
squad are three sophomores,
5'5" Glenn Krebs, 5'9" Bruce
Millman and 5'8" Terry Starr.
Practice sessions in the past
week have been geared to
ward skill refinement and
drills after an opening week of
conditioning work. ,
Concerning the Cards open
ing contest, LaRue said he
would have to "play it by
ear".
"Heppner has a new coach
and I really can't anticipate
too much," LaRue said.
"We'll just have to play it
straight and take it to them."
