Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Jor
gensen have returned from a
months vacation in Australia,
only to find their work load
waiting for them. Jorgensen is
Justice of the Peace and also
runs a trucking business,
while Mrs. Jorgensen does the
book work for both. While
Jorgensen was away Chester
Wilson took care of the duties
of Justice of the Peace.
The Jorgensens first went to
Melbourne where they visited
his brother A.G. Jorgensen.
They toured the city visiting
the older section.
In Port Arthur they visited
the first penal colony built in
1836, of sandstone. Much of the
original building was still
standing although a fire had
swept through and destroyed
parts of it. They found
Canberra the capitol of Aus
tralia to be a very beautiful
city with many parks and
beautiful buildings.
In Sydney they visited the
famous Opera House over
looking the Bay. The roof is all
of Spanish tile and is most
spectacular, according to
Mrs. Jorgensen.
Australia is famous for its
wild life and the Jorgensens
viewed the many different
sizes of kangaroo, the koala
and many bright colored birds
at a sanctuary. They found the
Cockatoo to be a very pretty
but noisy bird.
They went to Phillips Island
off the coast, where they
watched the penguins come in
at night to their burrows on
the beach. This type of
Penguin is the smallest of 18
species.
Mr. Jorgensen, being a
trucker was fascinated that
the trucks in Australia have
heavy bars welded on the front
to protect them from damage
if they should hit one of the
larger kangaroo, that are
often on the roads of Austra
lia. On the trip to Australia they
stopped over in Honolulu and
American Samoa. They lost a
day going, when they crossed
the International date line but
on the return trip they gained
it back. Leaving Sydney they
flew non-stop to Los Angeles in
15 hours and on to Portland in
two hours more. They left
Australia at 5 p.m. Saturday

Obie was outstanding in the Riviera Motors Distributors
area. He had the greatest increase in sales in their
service department, and was successful in bringing back
the older model vehicles to the Dealership. As a result,
he will be receiving U.S. Savings Bonds.

Jr. Girl Scouts are now
organizing in Irrigon with
meetings each Thursday after
school in the basement of the
Baptist Church. Serving as
leader of the group is Glenna
Greer.
They have had a calendar
sale and will be raffling off an
afghan on Dec. 1.
Any girl in 4th, 5th, or 6th
grade is welcome to join. So
far eight girls have joined the
troop.
Brownie Troop 355 also
meets after school on Wednes
day in the school cafeteria,
with leader Mrs. Judy Roher.
