The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, October 27, 1977 SEVEN
Lyle
With only 13 seconds elapsed
on the clock, the Heppner
Mustangs found themselves
behind by eight points and
slapped with a five yard
illegal procedure penalty
without ever having touched
the ball.
From there it got worse as
an uninspired Heppner team
increased its string of Home
coming defeats to the tune of a
42-14 shellacking by Lyle,
Wash.
Hurting at several key
positions, the Mustangs gave
up 332 yards in the game as
Lyle quarterback James Hil
zer completed seven of 14
passes for 140 yards and
Trojan runners carried for 182
yards.
Since they were forced to
play catch up football from the
outset, Heppner unveiled a
nearly forgotten passing game
with quarterback Jerry Cuts
forth completing 12 of 33
attempts for 138 yards. Tight
end Dale Holland was on the
receiving end of nine of the
throws for 70 yards and one
touchdown. Seniors Jim Wish
art and Gordon Hoffnagle split
the running duties for Hepp
ner with Hoffnagle gaining 63
yards on 18 carries and
Wishart picking up 49 yards on
17 runs.
Hizler, the leading scorer in
the state of Washington com
ing into the game, added to his
cause by hauling the opening
kickoff 86 yards for a touch
down. Randy Kamp carried
for the two point conversion
and Lyle had an 8-0 lead that
was never challenged.
When Heppner finally got a
chance to put the ball in play,
Cutsforth completed the first
of his passes to Holland but the
Mustangs were stopped short
of a first down. Following a
punt by substitute punter Jim
Parker, Eric Clow intercepted
Hilzer's second down pass and
returned it into Lyle territory.

Despite the break, Heppner
lost the ball on downs and
Hilzer found Andy Schlagen
for 45 yards to set up the
Trojan's second TD.
Following the kickoff, the

conversion made it 22-0 with
six minutes to go in the half.

Heppner mounted its only
scoring drive of the half from
their own 30 as Holland,
Hoffnagle and Wishart all
contributed first down plays.
Cutsforth hit Hoffnagle on a
35-yard scoring pass and Bob
Smith's extra point closed the
gap to 22-7. Lyle wasted no
time in regaining its 21 point
advantage as Hilzer notched
the visitor's fourth TD with 11
seconds to go in the half. '
The Mustangs came out
throwing in the second half
Cutsforth hit Holland and
Bryce Powell for good yard

Heppner a first down at the
Trojan eight and Cutsforth
found Holland in the endzone
for the score. Lyle posted its
next points in short order
aided by Randy Kamp's
30-yard gain and a pitch to Jeff
Kamp for 10.
On Heppner's next posses

a bad snap to the punter was
recovered by the Trojans at
the Mustang 12. Lyle moved to
the one before penalties and a
Sam Myers sack pushed the
ball out of scoring range.
Heppner took over on downs

Sporseen, "Good
offensive game. "
There was still seven min
utes left in the first half but the
Lyle defensive unit was stand
ing up in front of their bench
leading a cheer for their
offensive teammates on the
field fully confident that the
game with Heppner was in the
bag.
The Mustangs didn't do
much to change anyone's
thinking as they were steam
rolled by the Trojans 42-14
Friday in Mustang Stadium.
Heppner was never really in
the game after Lyle jumped to
an 8-0 lead on the strength of
an 86-yard return of the
opening kickoff.
"This is the first time I've
had the opening kickoff run
back against a team I've
coached," Mustang coach
John Sporseen said. "It was
just not a good game any way
you look at it."
Despite the lopsided score,
Sporseen pointed to several
interesting statistics in the
game. Heppner picked up 17
first downs to the Trojan's 11
while the Mustangs snapped

Quarterback Jerry Cuts
forth's 34 pass attempts was a
new high for Sporseen
coached teams and far ex
ceeded the Mustang's output
for the previous four games
combined.
With two-thirds of the start
ing backfield out of the lineup,
Jim Wishart and Gordon
Hoffnagle took up the running
slack and Dale Holland pulled
in nine Cutsforth passes.
"I'm not disappointed in the
offense at all," Sporseen said.
"The line play was good and it
was probably our best offen
sive game of the season."
The problem rested with the
defense which Sporseen said
was simply "not able to get up
for a fourth consecutive
week".
"It was partly a mental
problem, but it was also a
physical problem...they've
been through three straight
tough games," Sporseen said.

Although Wasco is winless,
