Beulah Lundell
shares talent
BY Justine Weatherford
Beulah Lundell, an 82-year-old grandmother of seven and
great-grandmother of seven has been sharing her musical
talent with Portland folk and visitors to that city's Santuary
of our Sorrowful Mother form many months. Mrs. Lundell,
widow of Algott Lundell, an lone area rancher, has played
Sunday afternoon benediction music at the grotto shrine on a
Hammond electric organ of the same kind she has in her
home in the Parkrose area.
Many adults in lone remember her as a teacher of piano
and as a most willing and helpful citizen. When she lived in
Morrow County she attended Valby Church with her family;
five years ago this summer she became a convert to
Catholicism.
Beulah attended the Colorado Women's College in
Denver; in 1909 she finished the 8th grade. That new college
also trained high school students, and after two years of high
school there, she moved with her parents to Portland. In 1913
she was in the first graduating class of the then "new"
Lincoln High School, now part of the Portland State
University campus. Her graduating class holds a reunion
every five years, with the next one scheduled for 1978, "if
enough people are alive to get there" she reflects.
After her graduation from Lincoln she accepted a
teaching position at Gooseberry School, in eastern Oregon
where she taught third and fourth grades. In 1914 she
married and became a busy ranch wife.
" Beulah moved to Parkrose to live near her youngest son,
Wally, and his family. She figured that "with four babies,
they could use a grandma." She took up her son's suggestion
to play the organ at the Sanctuary and she regularly attends
St. Rita's Church.
The above information is part of a two page article with
several pictures of Beulah which appeared in a Senior Profile
magazine which Katherine Lindstrom, lone, shared with this
reporter.
