In addition to their usual
duties of spurring the Mus
tangs on to victory each
Friday, the Heppner High
School cheerleaders have
found themselves extra busy
this week.
Acting as hostesses for
Homecoming the five girls
have been generating added
spirit all week at pep assem
blies and other activities. Led
by Marie Yocom, the squad
includes Tammy Lucas,
Joycelyn Thorpe, Rosanna
Marlatt and Laurie Harrison,
all juniors.
Each week these girls put as
much enthusiasm and energy
into their sideline activities as
the team on the field. Routines
are planned, choreographed
and practiced to perfection by
the girls, whose contagious
spirit would spur any team to
give their all.
Three of the cheerleaders,
Marie, Laurie, and Tammy,
are athletes in their own right
as teammates on the Fillies
varsity volleyball team.
Their blue and gold uni
forms, which add much to the
asthetic appeal of the squad,
were earned by working this
summer at the fair and rodeo
as ticket takers.
The idea that Heppner has
one of the best cheerleading
squads in the state is not
merely an illusion of local
pride. At the International
Cheerleading Foundation
camp this summer in Eugene,
the Heppner girls competed
against 50 other schools from
six different states. Cheering
their way into the Grand
Championship finals, the
squad placed third.
A boost to any team's
morale, Heppner's cheerlead
ers will put victory several
steps closer this Friday night.
