Opening week against Pilot Rock, Heppner drove all the way for a score on their initial possession and never looked back enroute to a 35-12 win. Junior halfbacks Bryan Mar lin and Dennis Peck each rushed for more than 125 yards and Joedy Marlatt led the Mustang defensive charge. For the second week, Hepp ner entertained Oregon Trail in a game that turned out to be a tight, low scoring struggle. The Mustangs and the current league co-leader remained deadlocked until a 37-yard OT field goal cleared the uprights "with 4 seconds remaining giving the Blazers a 10-7 victory. Peck again was the leading ground gainer and Jim Wishart turned in a strong defensive performance. Leaving the friendly con fines of the Rodeo grounds, Heppner next traveled to Riverside where the Pirates slapped the Mustangs with a 12-7 upset. A sluggish offen sive unit managed only 52 yards for the night as Hepp ner's title hopes took a dive. Returning to the home turf, the Mustangs put together the first of their lucky seven wins shutting our Weston- McEwen 7-0. Peck scampered 77 yards with the second half kickoff to provide the winning margin, Marlin racked up 90 yards on the ground and Bryce Powell led the defensive point totalers with four assists and six solo stops. Heppner next ventured into Sherman County territory to take on the unbeated Huskies. Bryce Powell broke loose on a 29-yard TD run and the Mustangs defense turned back several Sherman threats as Heppner took home a hard earned 7-6 win.
