the contest, allowing
him to represent Hepp
ner in the Blue Moun
tain District competi
tion Friday, Oct. 7, in
Pendleton. District win
ners from nine schools
will compete for a
chance to advance to a
sectional speak-off.
Pat Cimmiyotti was
judged winner at River
side High School on
Tuesday and will also
compete in the District
Contest. Both Creed
Speaking winners are
freshmen.

completed) will take
place on Friday night in
Pendleton. State FFA
officers will conduct the
initiation ceremony.
A mountain of rummage is
already piling up for the big
Soroptimist Rummage Sale
planned for Oct. 14-15 in the
Fair Pavilion at the fair
grounds. Toys, books, clothes, a
treadle sewing machine, a
badminton set, shoes, dishes,
Halloween masks, purses, and
a mound of boxed treasures is
taking over the club's storage

Notes
Activity at the Pioneer
Memorial Hospital seemed
slower from September 27
through Oct. 3. Dismissed
were Clifford Lucas, Norman
Lynn, Linda Sinerius, Aaron
Botts and Verna Brindle, all of
Heppner.
William Welch, Fossil, is
still hospitalized.
A great deal of activity is
taking place just outside the
building. It is being repaired
and repainted. The faded pink
exterior is being covered in
pale gold with a dark brown
trim.
Junior Symphony to perform
The Portland Junior Sym
phony, composed of young
musicians from ages 12-21, is
coming to eastern Oregon.
The group will appear in
concert in LaGrande on sun
day, October 23, at 8 p.m. in
the high school auditorium;
and in Enterprise on Monday,
October 24, at 8 p.m. in the
high school gymnasium.
The program is designed to
appeal to a broad range of
ages and musical tastes.
Tickets may be obtained by
writing the Eastern Oregon
Regional Arts Council, East
ern Oregon State College,
Administration Bldg., Room
210, LaGrande, Oreon, 97850;
or by calling Dennis Toney at
676-9407 in the evenings.
Ticket prices are $3 for
adults, $1 for children under
14, and $2 for senior citizens.
Toney named to Arts Council
Dennis Toney, Heppner
High School photography and
film instructor, has been
named Morrow County repre
sentative to the Eastern
Oregon Regional Arts Council
which meets Sept. 24 in
Enterprise.
"I want to bring cultural
happenings to Morrow Coun
ty," Toney explained as his
reason for becoming part of
the year-old organization.
He mentioned importing
theatrical groups, art exhi
bits, and concerts as well as
exchanging local talent with
other parts of the state as
possibilities of things to come.
"The purpose of EORAC is
to bring Eastern Oregon
together as an art communi
ty", Toney commented. He
said the organization was
formed to allow Eastern
Oregon to enjoy some of the
cultural events it has missed
in the past, such as the
upcoming appearance of the
Portland Junior Symphony in
LaGrande and Enterprise
the first major project the
council has sponsored.
Goals of the EORAC
elude; developing artist re
source lists in Eastern Ore
gon, publishing a quarterly
newsletter, assisting the Ore
gon Arts Commission in the
"Artist Survival Kit" work
shop at Eastern Oregon Col
lege in November, providing
information to the region's
interested arts support
groups, disseminating infor
mation to the region from
government agencies and
serving as a clearing house for
touring group scheduling.
Auction Saturday
The Umatilla County Histo
rical Society's first big An
tique Auction will be Satur
day, October 8th at the Robert
Mumm Ranch, six miles north
of Pendleton on Holdman
Highway No. 37.
The public is invited to
attend and may preview
antiques from 10 p.m. until
the auction begins at 1 p.m.
The Pendleton CB'ers will
have hamburgers, hot dogs,
pie, cold drinks and coffee for
sale.

for unused, "white elephant"
treasures.

. Spanish speaking church
services were started at the
Irrigon Assembly of God on
Sat. at 7:30 p.m. Spanish
music is featured at the
meetings.
The speaker is E. Pael from
Tamaulipas, Mexico. Mr. and
Mrs. Pael and their family
live in Sunnyside, Wash, now,
where he ministers at a
Spanish church on Sundays.
The Assembly of God is
located 3 blocks North of the
highway on 8th St. in Irrigon.
All faiths are welcome to
come, sing to worship together.
