"We just shut them down, that's the best defensive game we've ever had," Riverside coach Mike Wetherell said of his Pirates' 12-7 win over Heppner Friday. The Pirates certainly did shut down the Mustangs, limiting the visitors to only four first downs and 52 yards total offense. "We play a six-man line and challenge teams to pass," Wetherell said. "If they were going to beat us, they were going to have to come right at Sporseen, "No excuses. " Before the season started, Heppner coach John Sporseen said his team was going to surprise a lot of people this year. True to form, the Mustangs surprised even themselves in dropping a 12-7 contest to an underregarded Riverside Pi rate team Friday. The loss dropped Heppner to 1-2 on the year the first time the team has experienced a sub .500 record under Sporseen. "I don't like to make excuses for losing," Sporseen said. "They simply beat us." Wetherell said his team keyed outside to take away Heppner's preference for run ning around the ends. He pointed to the play of defen sive ends Jeff Garrison and Lerry Wilson as a big factor in the Pirate defensive effort. Garrison, a senior, returned from a second game injury and Wilson, a freshman, was shifted to the end spot for the Heppner game. "No matter how much we practice against it, we always seem to have trouble with a six-man line," Sporseen said. Riverside's strategy paid off by closing the outside alleys and inviting the Mustangs to pass. Still Heppner could manage only two yards through the air to go with 50 yards on the ground. "Our offensive line wasn't able to move anyone," Spor seen said, noting that part of the problem was attributed to improper footwear for the slippery field conditions. On first and goal from the 10, Bozarth hit Brandt to give the Pirates their first win of the season while Heppner dropped to 1-2 on the year. Bozarth directed the Pirate offense which totaled 171 yards and the Riverside defense limited Heppner to only 52 yards for the night. Bozarth completed 8 of 18 passes for 105 yards, finding Brandt four times for 64 yards and Wilkie twice for 23 yards. Riverside's Bill Griffin led all rushers with 63 yards on 11 carries. Heppner was held to only four first downs and could manage only two yards through the air. The Mustangs were hounded by Riverside's six-man defensive front which saw standout performances by ends Lerry Wilson and Jeff Garrison. Wilson, a freshman, was credited with nine tackles and seven assists while also blocking one pass. After returning the opening kick off to their own 37, Riverside drove to the Hepp ner 39 where a fourth down roughingthekicker call gave the Pirates a first down on the 30. On third and 10, Bozarth rolled right and kept the ball for a 15 yard gain. Griffin picked up another first down off tackle to set up the scoring pass to Brandt. The Mustangs started a march of their own with Peck going up the middle for 17 yards on a third and 18 draw play. Bruce Young came in to pick up the first down and Bryan Marlin carried twice for another first. Both teams were again forced to punt as they had trouble with the slippery field condi tions and Riverside carried its 6-0 lead into the intermission. Opening the second half, Marlin carried three straight times for a first down before Peck was stopped twice in the backfield once by Garrison and once by Deeno Leighton and Ladd Kanyid. On third and 30, Cutsforth's pass was intercepted by Steve Daulton but Heppner regained posses sion on Sam Myers' fumble recovery at the Pirate 26. The Mustangs lost the opportunity when Pirate de fender Jim Siberz stepped in front of a Cutsforth pass and ran 70 yards to the Heppner eight. But on fourth and goal from the four, Peck returned the favor by running a Bozrth interception back to the 35 yard line of Heppner. After a Heppner punt, Steve Marlatt sacked Bozarth and the Heppner defense stacked up the middle to stop Griffin forcing another punt. As neither team was able to generate a drive, punts were again exchanged. Peck gath ered in a Pirate boot at his own25 and took off on a 75-yard return to get Heppner on the scoreboard. With the clock winding down, Riverside mounted its final drive to take the lead for good. On their final posses sion, the Mustangs went long three times with Cutsforth's third attempt intercepted by Daulton. The Pirates then ran out the clock for the win. Heppner beat lone with game scores of 15-9 and 15-7 as Janice Healy led all scorers with 10 points. Jackie Molla han and Maureen Healy again handled the spiking duties for the Fillies with eight and seven slams, respectively. Each had three ace spikes in the match. Grace McEUigott led lone scorers with six points while Susan Thompson contributed three spikes and led the team in sets. In JV competition, Heppner bested lone in three games with scores of 15-7, 9-15 and 15-12. McEUigott had 15 points in the match. Heppner JVs lost to Sher man 5-15, 15-8 and 11-15 as Jana Steagall scored 13 points and added two spikes and a block.
