'Happiness is ..' parade theme
"Happiness is..." provides
the theme for this year's
Morrow County Fair and for
parade and float chairman
Jim Wishart, "Happiness"
would be a sunny Saturday
morning without any runaway
horses or go-karts.
With one year's experience
under his belt, Wishart is now
in the process of rounding up
the floats, courts, riders and
hopefully a marching band for
the parade scheduled for
Saturday, August 27, begin
ning at 10 a.m.
Wishart says the entries will
be coming in right up to the
starting time and he is
expecting to equal last year's
total of 68. There will be plenty
of categories to allow as many
as possible to get in on the
prize money and ribbons.
A special prize this year will
be a ribbon and $10 award to
the entry that best depicts the
Fair theme, "Happiness is..."
Also changed for this year
will be the assembly area
which has been moved to the
vacant lot across from the
Morrow County Grain Grow
ers. From there, the paraders
will travel up Main Street past
the reviewing stand at the
Wagon Wheel Cafe and on
around to Court Street. At the
elementary school the group
will split with some continuing
on to the Fairgrounds and the
others returning to Main
Street via Quaid Street.
Entries in the float category
so far include;- the Morrow
County Search and Rescue
Posse, Heppner American
Legion, Soroptimists, Oregon
State Forestry, Boardman
Lions and Auxiliary, Pioneer
Memorial Hospital and Dean's
Appliances.
Also scheduled for the
lVfe-mile trip is some farming
equipment from Morrow
County Grain Growers, sev
eral antique cars, the Main
Street Cowboys from Pendle
ton and a little marching
music provided by an authen
tic calliope.
As far as the music goes,
Jim Ackley is again trying to
assemble another edition of
Heppner's Amazing Hodge
podge Marching Musical
Menagerie. Anyone is wel
come to participate and prac
tices will be held Monday and
Tuesday, August 22 and 23,
beginning at 6 p.m. in the
Heppner High School band
room.
