4H'ers extra
busy during
fair week
The first place you'll see
. when you drive out to county
fair grounds is marked "4-H
Annex". That's where you'll
see what has been happening
with the members enrolled in
the 4-H homenec projects, the
4-H creative arts, vegetable
projects, and all other project
areas with the exception of
livestock. That is also where
you'll have the opportunity to
see the 4-H presentations, and
a wide variety of contests.
Everyone in 4-H likes an
audience, for they are at the
Fair to show what they have
learned, or have been doing,
the past year. There is an open
invitation to everyone to
attend all events, and to come
by and enjoy a close look at
exhibits in the 4-H annex.
There are always friendly 4-H
leaders and superintendents
on hand, so don't be afraid to
ask questions, or for help in
finding a special exhibit of
interest.
We encourage you to visit
the 4-H exhibits early in the
week, as dates of the. Morrow
County fair coincide with
State Fair, and all exhibits '
selected for the state show
must leave early Wednesday
morning to be entered in
Salem that day to be judged.
Events for the home-ec girls
start early Monday morning
with style revue judging at the
gym by the elementary
school. The big public style
show is Tuesday evening, in
front of the main grandstand
at the fairgrounds. This is the
high point for the 4-H clothing
and knitting members, when
they model thier garments,
showing not only what they
have made, but how well they
have put it all together, and
their poise and confidence in
modeling. This year a new
contest, "favorite outfit" has
been added, with participants
also modeling in the public
revue.
The Annex is a busy place
all day Tuesday, as members
come in for interviews as the
judge looks over their gar
ments or articles, and crea
tive art exhibits, tastes the
food products, and gives
helpful hints to the member
before placing the ribbons.
Wednesday's action in the
4-H building is food prep
aration contests, and sewing
and knitting skills. We emph
asize the events that bring the
members in to actually show
the skills they have ac
complished. There will be
dinners prepared, with special
guests invited, pies, breads,
snacks, and breakfasts will be
served up while both the judge
and audience observe. While
this is going on, others will be
sewing and knitting under the
watchful eye of the judge.
Early Thursday morning
the special interest turns to
what we think of as the "style
revue" of the foods members.
The Favorite Food Show event
allows opportunity for the
members to show food prep
aration skills, table settings,
menu planning, nutritional
learnings, and also being a
gracious hostess. Space does
not allow them to remain on
display all day, so be sure to
come early to see this special
event.
Presentations start immed
iately after the food show, and
may be a demonstration of
how to do or make something,
an illustrated lecture, or any
type presentation where the ,
members share information
with the audience. All pre
sentations are scheduled to be
given on Thursday, with time
for each presentation posted.
To be able to effectively
present information is a
skill needed more today than
ever before, and these kids are
really great. You'll be amazed
at their creative ideas, their
poise, and their ability to
communicate.
There will be seats avail
able, so feel free to walk in and
watch for awhile, or stay the
entire time. Many have the
mistaken idea that total
silence or no distractions are
necessary while presentations
are underway, but we feel the
audience is a most necessary
part of the presentation. Don't
miss the outstanding pre
sentations given by Morrow
4-H'ers of all ages.
Breakfast
slated
for 4H'ers
A special event during Fair
this year will be a breakfast
for all 4-H leaders, Thursday,
August 25, 6:30a.m. at West of
Willow Restaruant, courtesy
of the 4-H Leaders Council.
After the full week of fair,
everyone begins to get a little
weary, so this special event is
planned in appreciation of the
work leaders have carried out
all year.
Louis Carlson, lone 4-H
leader, is in charge of plans
for the breakfast and he
promises it will be worth
getting out of bed extra early
that morning. Those who plan
to attend are asked to notify
Louis by calling 422-7282, or by
card to Box 295, lone.
