The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Ore., Thursday, August II, 1977 SEVEN District awards to swimmers Mustang gridders Kinzua heads for state : Kinzua scored only seven runs as they dropped two of three games in district soft ball action in Hermiston but still came away with a second place seeding for the State Recreation . Tournament in Junction City this weekend. The team started the dis trict tournament with a 4-3 win over East Oregonian before losing a 6-3 contest to Prowler and 'll-O rematch with East Oregonian. Kinzua was given a berth in the state tournament after the E.O.r was disqualified for using non-registered players. A team batting average of .222 hampered Kinzua 's efforts although Gearl Seal (.600) and Buck Query (.500) performed well at the plate. East Oregonian-Kinzua The first game went ten innings before Kinzua record ed the winning run on Gearl Seal's double which scored Jamie Sands to clinch the win 4-3. The East Oregonian jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first and held Kinzua scoreless till the fourth. - Bill Baker got on base with a walk and scored on Jamie Sands' double. In the sixth inning, Kinzua scored two runs as Baker singled and an error put Gary Kemp on first. Singles by John McCabe and Gearl Seal knocked in the runs. Four Heppner will be well rep resented at the National High School Rodeo Championships as Ron Currin, Janice Healy and Dawn Peterson will make the trip to Helena, Mont., for the August 14-21 competition. Joining the Heppner delega tion in Helena will be Lawr ence Rice, a recent Heppner arrival, who qualified in the bronc riding event and will represent Redmond High School o Janice Healy Dawn Prowler-Kinzua The next contest saw Prow ler beat Kinzua 6-3. Kinzua came up with ll hits and good defense for their best perfor mance in the tournament. Prowler led early with four runs in the first. Kinzua answered with Keith Curnutt's home run. The next runs were scored in the third by Sands and Kemp. Hits were credited to Sands, McCabe and Seal. Kinzua failed to score the Zu second in Stockdale Realty came from ninth place in the league to knock off Kinzua 7-1 to capture second place in the Hermiston Slo-Pitch City Tournament. Kinzua took home the fourth place trophy. Third place went to Erico and Rowmarks grab bed first. Kinzua earlier in the tourn ament beat Highes 12-0 and Hermiston Herald 13-10. Their other loss was to Rowmark's 10-3. Hughes Enterprise Kinzua Kinzua came up with seven boun Currin, Healy and Rice are all upcoming seniors at Hep pner and Peterson is a 1977 IHS graduate. Janice quali fied in both the barrel racing and the cow cutting events, Dawn in barrel racing and Ron in bull dogging. Each placed in the top four during this year's state high school competition and they will be among the approx imately 40 Oregon contestants in the 12 events. East Oregonian-Kinzua The East Oregonian took advantage of a Kinzua batting slump as they, beat the Heppner team ll-0. Kinzua had only three hits and five errors for the game. Kinzua had 21 hits as they held Hermiston scoreless in the first, second and sixth innings. In the first, Keith Curnutt scored on Jamie Sands' home run followed by a run from Marvin Lane. Mike Smith and John McCabe were left on base. Kinzua scored one run in the third when McCabe drove in Curnutt. The Herald took the lead 6-4 in the third when they capitalized on two Kinzua errors. Runs crossed the plate were tagged to Alleman, Turping, Green, Hayworth, Savage and Ruhl. Kinzua took revenge in the fourth and the lead by three runs on Gearl Seal's double, Buck Query, Gary Kemp, Mike Smith, and Keith Cur nutt's singles. The fifth saw Greene score a run for Hermiston Herald and Buck and Jamie Query score on Kemp's double. The contest tightened in the seventh as Hermiston Herald fought back but came up with three runs short of victory. Singles by John McCabe and Mike Rowell scored runs, sealing the win for Kinzua. Kinzua Stockdale Kinzua came up with seven hits, four in the last inning in a 9-3 loss to Stockdale. In the first inning, Kinzua pushed across one run on the strength of Keith Curnutt's triple. Stockdale came back with two runs in the first and one in the fourth before breaking away with six in the sixth. Stockdale was aided by four Kinzua errors in the contest. During Saturday's "B" ses sion, Mary Arbogast took home a blue ribbon with a winning time of 42.3 in the girls 11-12 50-meter freestyle. Mary also finished fourth in the 50-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:01.0 and fourth in the 50-meter fly in 57.2. Cindi Bergstrom placed second in the girls 13-14 50-meter breast with a time of 49.0 and David Franks was fourth in the boys 11-12 50-meter back in 55.4. "A" level times were recor ded by Mary Arbogast and Carrie Franks in the 50-meter backstroke and David Franks in the boys 11-12 50-meter free. Over the tee cup Heading golf action this week was a barbeque, Sunday, August 7. The team of John Edmund son, Kristi Edmundson, Dana Sweek and Dean Wright won the team low gross honors with a five under par 55. The high gross prize went to the team of Herman Winters, Harriet Evans and Suzanne Jepsen. Winning the long drive contest was Bob Jepsen for the men and Kristi and Pat Edmundson for the gals. John Edmundson and Roberta Klaus won the KP awards. . The next family barbeque will be August 20. Charlie Rawlins traveled to Yakima for the tournament last weekend and placed 20th with a score of 76-73, 149. Dave Harrison won low gross Steagalls Umatilla With a first place tie in the calf riding, a second in the barrel racing and a fourth in the pole bending, Jana Stea gall, Lexington, won the Jr. Girl All-Around title at the Umatilla County Fair and Jr. Rodeo last week. Jana is currently leading the All-Around for the year in Western States with the finals to be held in John Day August 27 and 28. Rocky Steagall, Irrigon, won the Jr. Boys All-Around at Umatilla and is also leading the Jr. Boys All-Around for the year. H . m Lawrence Rice On Sunday, in the "A" competition, Kelli Bergstrom scored in all three events she swam, placing first in the girls 9-10 50-meter free (38.2). second in the 50-meter breast (49.8) and second in the 200 individual medley (3:41.5). Shelly Biddle finished fifth in two events with times of 1 : 05.9 in the girls 9-10 50-meter butterfly and 57.6 in the breast. In the same age group, Ellen Arbogast placed sixth in the 50-meter back (56.5) and eighth in the 50-meter free (49.2). Karen Kenny finished sec ond in the girls 13-14 50-meter back with a time of 39.4, Cam George was sixth in the boys 9-10 50-meter breast in 55.5 and Shane Laughlin took eighth in the boys 11-12 50-meter breast in 49.8. Heppner swimmers travel to John Day will this weekend for the final meet of the season. in men's play, Sunday, August 7. Dave McLeod took the low net honors and Gary Hunt won the least putts award. Ed Hiemstra won the long drive contest and David Campbell won the KP award. Willow Creek's men's medal tournament will be held Sun day, August 14. The contest will be a 27-hole event and tee off time is 8 a.m. Three different awards were given this week at women's play. Tuesday, Aug ust 2. The three best holes out of nine prize went to Charlotte Osmond. The second prize was "the three best holes out of fives" and Vi Lanham was the winner of that contest. Janice Healy won the senior barrels and took sixth in pole bending. Dawn Peterson, lone, was third in barrels and fourth in breakaway while Cindy Dougherty, Heppner, was second in pole bending. In senior boys tie down calf roping, Steve Marlatt was fourth and Jody Marlatt was sixth.
