For the third consecutive
week, Mike Rowell led Kin
zua 's attack with a perfect
three-for-three performance
at the plate including a home
run. Bill Baker contributed
another round tripper to add
to his game-leading RBI total
of five.
Midway threatened to break
the game open early, scoring
five runs in the first with the
help of four walks and a
Kinzua error. Baker's single
was all Kinzua could answer
with in their half of the
opening frame.
In the second, Kinzua shut
down Midway after one run on
a pick off play and outfield put
outs by John McCabe and
Dave Eckman.
Rowell started off a seven-'
run Kinzua rally in the second
with a walk followed by
another free pass to Gearl .

Swimmers take Hermiston here,
finish fourth at Prineville
A depleted Heppner swim
team traveled to Prineville
last Saturday where the best
they could manage was a
fourth place finish among the
five teams present. With
swimmers missing from al
most every age group, Hep
pner won only two events and
had to scratch several relays.
Topping the field was the
host team with 584 points

All-Stars bow at District
The Willow Creek All-Stars
were shut out of the win
column as they dropped three
straight games during last
week's District 5 Little League
tournament at Culver.
The locals were edged
Thursday 7-6 by Redmond to
start the skid. Manager Ted
Toll credited his team with
good defensive play as they
stayed tied with Redmond
until the final inning.

get Kinzua in the game.
Midway came' back with
three runs in the third on two
Kinzua errors. A fourth run
was nullified when a Midway
runner failed to touch home
plate.
Rowell homered for Kin
zua's lone run in the third.
Midway tied the game in the
fourth scoring two runs on a
Kinzua error. Outfielders
Sands, McCabe and Eckman
shut down further Midway
attempts by catching well-hit
balls.
Kemp's single started off a
three-run Kinzua fourth and
was followed by Baker's triple
and singles by Sands and
Lane. Midway came back with
four runs in the fifth with the
help of walks and throwing
errors.
The scoring continued in the
sixth with Kinzua adding three
runs on singles by Sands,
McCabe and Rowell and a
two-bagger by Lane. Kinzua
stranded the tying run on
base, leaving the score at
15-14.
Burns with 3142, Heppner
with 178 and Redmond with
106.
First place medals were
earned by Penny Connor with
a time of 29.2 in the girls 8 and
under 25-meter butterfly and
Tom James, who won the boys
9-10 25-meter butterfly in a
time of 23.0.

The following day saw
Willow Creek collect only
three hits and commit eight
errors in a 13-0 blanking at the
hands of Hood River.
Saturday, Willow Creek was
beaten by Columbia in a game
that was scoreless until the
fourth. Parker went the dis
tance and Roger Morter,
contributed two doubles to go
along with Russell Brannon's
triple.

Kinzua failed to score in the
seventh and the game was
given to Midway which batted
in the home team position.
The loss placed Kinzua in
third place in the final league
standings with a 17-5 mark. ,

week. The Heppner team will
play in a district tournament
this weekend with the top two

Several sessions of swim
ming lessons, including life
saving, adult learn-to-swim,
springboard diving, and a
special class for children with
mental or physical difficulty
in adjusting to water will be
held at the Heppner Swim
' ming Pool this month.
A combined junior and
senior life saving class will be
held evenings beginning at 6
p.m. August 16 and continuing
through August 27. Registra
tion for all classes should be
made now at the pool.
Springboard diving will be
held from 11 a.m. until noon
beginning August 9 and will
continue through August 20.
Adult learn-to-swim will be
held August 23 through 31 with
a series of evening hours to be
arranged.
A final session of swim
lessons for children with
certain mental or physical
problems in adjusting to the
water will be held from 11

The cost for all of the
sessions, which will run 10
hours each, is $5 plus text in
the life saving classes. The
one exception is the adult
swim class which will be an
intensive five hour course plus
five hours of free swim under
supervision.
The mother-tot swim ses
sions will continue through
August at noon on Monday,
Wednesday and Friday. All
adult swim sessions continue
from 8 p.m. until 10 p.m.
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thurs
day and Sunday. Teen swim
continues on Friday nights.
The adult swim has been
modified to a family swim
program. Children are admit
ted if accompanied by parents
during the remainder of the
season.
