Imagine being placed in a
situation where a victim's life
hinges on your knowledge of
basic life-sustaining skills.
The thought probably fright
ens most people but an ever -increasing
number are realizing
that their applicaton of cardio
pulmonary resusitation (CPR)
techniques could turn a possibly
Memorial Hospital. Linda has
conducted CPR classes for the
past two years here and
estimates , she has certified
"close to 125 people" in that
time.
With the increased interest
expressed lately, Linda is
conducting more classes than
ever and will continue to
staff kitchen help and office
staff included have
participated in CPR training.
"There's a few who don't
have it yet but we'll get to
them," Linda said.
One person who is glad she
has the training is Linda
Dunaway, a nurse at the
hospital. Only a few days after
"We have our cardio equip
ment in one room but a patient
could stop breathing anywhere
in the hospital," she said.
"Every patient who could
have problems is not going to be
close to the equipment when
they need it." A major advan
tage of CPR is that the
life-saving procedure can be
started as soon as the breathing
problem is realized. Properly
trained individuals should re-
quire only a matter of seconds
to clear the air passage and
begin the process.
Drills are held at the hospital
periodically to simulate emer
gency situations and keep the
staff in practive for administer
ing CPR.
"Even if it's only one life that
can be saved once in a while, it's
still well worth the training
required," Rosie said.
CPR can make the difference.

CPR is a first aid procedure
consisting of recognizing res
piratory and cardiac arrest and
applying the necessary artific
ial means to keep the victim
supplied with circulating oxy-
schedule classes according to
public demand.
Classes consist of six hours of
instruction, divided into two
sessions. A minimum of six
persons is required for a class
and Linda and her assistant
instructor, Richard Cox, can

May a patient went into cardiac
arrest and Linda, along with
another RN and a doctor spent
the next hour and a half keeping
the patient alive by CPR.

gen. The procedure involves
mouth-to-mouth resusitation
coupled with chest compres
sions to keep the person
breathing. It can be used in
emergency situations until the
victim recovers sufficiently to
be transported or until advan
ced life support is available.
Public interest in CPR has
increased dramatically across
the country and the level-headed
use of CPR techniques has
been credited with saving
countless lives. CPR can be
invaluable in treating many
emergency situations ranging
from heart attacks to persons
experiencing breathing diffi
culties from blocked air ways to
shock victims of auto accidents.
Heppner is fortunate to have a
qualified instructor of CPR in
Linda Connor, a Licensed
Practical Nurse at Pioneer
accommodate up to 20 per class.
There is a $5 charge per person
and you must be at least 13
years old to participate.
Organization and groups are
encouraged to set up classes for
their members or employes.
Linda will be carrying her
resusi-Annie a dummy used in
CPR instruction to Condon
and surrounding areas to teach
classes and will also be instruc
ting employes at the Kinzua
mill.
Anyone interested in signing
up for CPR classes or obtaining
further information should call
Linda at 676-5531 or Cox at
989-8167. After successfully
completing the class, the par
ticipant is certified in CPR by
the Oregon Heart Association.
The value of CPR is highly
regarded at Pioneer Hospital
where virtually the entire
but as Linda said, "If I hadn't
taken the class, I wouldn't have
had the first notion of what to

Rosie Smith, director of
nurses at Pioneer, agrees that
CPR training can be extremely
important, especially in a
nursing home situation such as
Pioneer.
