Sign shop opens
Irrigon's newest business
opened the past week, located in
Clark's store building on High
way 730. Bill and Dorothy Weir
and their sons, Don, Bill and
Tom ages 20, 17 and 16 will
operate the sign painting bus
iness. The family owned and
operated business specializes in
sign and truck lettering. Fancy
panel truck scenics, bill boards,
oil portraits, murals, wildlife,
seascapes and architectural
drawings are also a part of their
work.
The Weir family comes from
Endicott, Wash., where Weir

versity in Salem. The week-long
program of participation gov
ernment is sponsored by the
American Legion Auxilary.
The Citizens of Girls State
belong to mythical Counties,
Cities and Political Parties.
Each Party (the Nationalists
and the Federalists) nominates
a slate of officers for the State.
Dee is serving as alternate to
the Nationalist Party Conven
tion, Cc-ol is the Federalist
Party Chairman of West County
and also a delegate to the
Federalist Convention. Grace is
serving as a state represent
ative. The week of activities is
highlighted by elections begin
ning Sunday evening with the
election of City officials.

Nevada. He spent a year in the
Old Golden Hotel in Reno doing
portrait work for movie stars
and other celebraties. The Old
Golden Hotel has since been
destroyed by fire.

counties. A campaign rally is
held Wednesday evening for the
candidates for state offices,
followed by the General Elec
tion Thursday with the an
nouncement in the afternoon of
next years Oregon Girls State
Governor and other winners of
State offices.
Friday evening is the Grand
Finale with the Inauguration of
the 1978 Girls State Governor at
7:30, the all-Citizen Candlelight
Ceremony at 9 and the announ:
cement at 9:45 of the two girls
chosen as Girls Nation Dele
gates. Girls Nation is a program
similiar to Oregon Girls State
only the girls meet in Wash
ington D.C. This program is
sponsored by the American
Legion Auxiliary and the girls
learn about the operations of
government on the national

The "Northwesterners,"
four-member musical group
from Kirkland, Wash., will be
featured in concert at the
Christian Life Center on July 1
beginning at 7 p.m.
The group is traveling as a
part of the annual summer
music program sponsored by
Northwest College of the As
semblies of God, located
Kirkland.
The "Northwesterner's" pre
sentation is quite varied, ac
cording to Pastor W. Duane
Geyer, and is designed to
appeal to the tastes of both
young and old. Their aim is to
help young people face the
contemporary problems of life
in today's world. Singing select
ions ranging from contemp
orary to traditional, the group
brings to its mucical program
an exciting message presenting
Christ in all his fullness.
There is no admission charge
for the evening of music.

Mike Howell, County Extension
Agent in Morrow County, an
nounced his resignation last
week to accept a teaching job in
Vocational Agriculture at Nys
sa, Oregon. Mike and his
family, wife Jeanne; daughter,
Cristin, and son Shaun, will be
greatly missed by Morrow
County.
Mike was responsible for the
4-H and Livestock program
during his four years in Morrow
County. Mike was active in the
Lion's Club and the Methodist
Church, as well as many other
activities.
The 4-H Livestock work will be
continued by Harold Kerr and
Birdine Tullis until a replace
ment for Mike's position can be
found.

Welfare
forum
Citizens will have the oppor
tunity to discuss the govern
ment's role as a welfare
provider during a Town Hall
meeting scheduled for July 14 at
Heppner Elementary School.
Questions pertaining to ec
onomic security for Americans
and the extent to which the
federal government should pro
vide that security will be the
topic of similar meetings across
the state on July 14.
The Heppner meeting will begin
at 6:45 p.m. in the school's
multi-purpose room. At 7 p.m.,
a tape will be shown of
highlights from a major con
ference "Wages, Welfare or
What" which was recorded in
Portland April 15-16. An open
discussion will follow.
All ideas and views on public
policy relative to economic
security will be welcomed..
People attending will be asked
to fill' "out questionnaires expres
sing their views. The statewide
results will be compiled and
sent to Washington D.C. as a
representative voice of Oregon.
President Carter will intro
duce welfare modifying legisla
tion this summer. The organiz
ers of the Town Hall meetings
hope that July 14 the people of
Oregon will join forces to make
the governmental process work.

Nightly meetings will be held

Morrow County fair grounds.
The meetings will be informal
and all are invited to attend.
There will be no donations or
contributions taken.

familiar with the Baha'i Faith,
it began in the mid 1800's in
Persia. It is an independant
religion and has followers
world-wide. The prophet-founder,
Baha'U'llah, taught that
there is only one God, that
Mankind is one family and that
