Francis Rose Wilson 922-3352
Gladys Hobbs has retired
from teaching at A C. Hough
ton Elementary School, after
having taught 16 years in Irri
gon and 16 years in Kansas.
A.C. Houghton is the North
Morrow County Grade School
' for the communities of Irrigon
and Boardman. Mrs. Hobbs
taught fourth grade.
She came to Irrigon as
Gladys Hughes. Here she met
and married Floyd Hobbs,
then a widower with a growing
family. They have 2 teen-age
daughters at home presently.
A retirement party was
given for Mrs. Hobbs by the
school faculty on May 19, at
the Columbia Inn in east
Umatilla. An engraved silver
bell was presented to her as
well as a scrapbook with
personal notes and memen
toes from her students, former
students and teachers that she
had been associated with.
Many expressed their ap
preciation for her cheery
laugh and positive attitude
towards education. She will be
remembered by many as an
excellent teacher.
The Parents' Club gave a
reception for Mrs. Hobbs and
for Maxwell Jones, who will
retire as custodian in Sep
tember. The communities of
Boardman and Irrigon honor
ed them with many tributes
and well wishes for their
futures. Each was given a
money tree.
Quite a number of the
Hobbs' relatives attended the
reception, including: Mr. and
Mrs. Raymond Hobbs of
Baker; Mr. and Mrs. Floyd
Willis and Eldon Hobbs of
North Powder; Mrs. Chuck
Moeller of Heppner; Mr. and
Mrs. Allen Hobbs of Klamath
Falls; Byron Hobbs of Port
land. Mrs. Laverne Partlow's
third grade class entertained
at the reception with a square
dance. Denice Brownlee, a
sixth grade student, played a
piano solo. Michelle Cooley
and Tiffany Mark played a
piano duet.
On Monday evening, June 6,
Mr. and Mrs. Hobbs, Jyl and
Becky entertained the school
faculty and their families with
a barbequed chicken dinner,
served picnic style on the lawn
at the Hobbs' home. There
were about 50 guests.
Pastor Bob Schmoll an
nounces Vacation Bible School
will be June 13 to 17 at the
Assembly of God in Irrigon,
from 1-3:30 p.m. The theme
will be "The King is Coming."
There will be classes for all
children ages 4 through 12
years. Everyone is welcome.
Mr. and Mrs. AI Partlow
drove to Seattle to visit their
daughter Sherry, a student at
Seattle Pacific College. Sher
ry and a group of students left
for London on . Thursday,
where they will be studying
the Tudor History of England.
Sherry and her friends ex
pected to attend many of the
festivities commemorating
the 25th anniversary of the
reign of Queen Elizabeth.
The 4-H Macrame Club met
for their first meeting last
Thursday, June 9, at the
Irrigon Park on the Columbia
River. Francine Evans, the
leader, said there were five

"The Alpha and Omega of
strawberries" was presented
by Pat Pettyjohn at the June
meeting of the lone Garden
Club at the home of Wilma
Martin in Condon, on June 8.
The strawberry is known to
have been grown by the Ro
mans and was first cultivated
in the 16th century. The two
major types are the standard
or June-bearing, which has
only the one crop and is the
best for commercial growing;
and the ever-bearing, which
bears more than once during
the season.
Strawberries will grow in
most soils that have good
humus and drainage. They do.,,
not like to be grown on soil
that has raised potatoes, to
matoes or grass. Since they
have shallow root systems,
they need a constant water
supply of as much as one inch
per week. They also need good
air circulation. Plants may be
grown in rows, hills, or in a
strawberry barrel.
The Flag Observance was
presented by Judy Osmin with
her son, Derek, holding the
flag. The group voted to
present a Sunset Western
Garden Book to the lone
Public Library, as a memorial
to Fannie Griffith, a long time
Garden Club member. Janet
Wilson was a guest for the
day.
The A.A.U.W. and the Topic
Club will sponsor a story time
at the City Library this
summer for pre-school and
primary children. It will be
held each Tuesday at 3:30
p.m.
Betty Rietmann will or
ganize the story times and
anyone interested in helping
with telling or reading stories
is encouraged to contact her.
Summer library hours are
from 2 to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays
and Fridays. The first story
time will be Tuesday, June 21,
at 3:30 p.m.
The story times are de
signed to encourage young
children to enjoy books, and
children are encouraged to
check out books while at the
library. It is hoped that
parents will also take ad
vantage of this time to select
books from the library for
themselves.
Summer school started on
June 9 and will continue until
July 1. Driving school buses
