About
with Justine Wcatherford
I have been trying to do a little serious, but belated, spring
house and garage cleaning, and I am again considering what
a great system marriage is especially for some males.
Why do menfolk keep the things they keep for years and
years? As we moved three times within four years (all right
here in Morrow County), I found it just didn't make sense to
unbox lots of stuff. Last week 1 finally got around to some box
openings.
Of course, the necessities of life, those important things
I've collected, are so reasonable and worthwhile. But why
have we kept moving those boxes of HIS old stuff? I wonder if
any other couples have similar problems?
As I recall our last several moves, whenever I'd ask my
husband what to do about certain gear, his stock reply was,
"Take it to the dump" except for those boxes of HIS things,
which we moved and moved.
So, in a rush to get ahead of summer visitors, last week as
the temperature shot up, our fireplace kept us even warmer
when I was granted HIS permission to burn a large per cent
of his marvelous collection of cancelled checks, mementos
and memorabilia. Ah, now there will be a little more room
around our place for significant things like I collect.
My burning wasn't quite completed when a cousin from
California came by but observing my situation, he kindly
stayed very briefly and moved on to Pasco.
A good letter from the travellers Eleanor and Ed Gonty
tells us of their visits in North Dakota, Minnesota, Illinois,
Indiana and Iowa. Their son Doug is travelling with them as
they move along east to his port of embarcation for continued
Army duty in Europe. Son Tom, who went as far as N.
Dakota, came home to care for the home place.
Eleanor writes, "Don't let anyone tell you that retired
people can travel and live as cheaply as at home. I think we
should keep going hate to face the gas bills." (The Gontys
travel in luxury in a new motor home which could be guzzling
considerable gas.)
Her letter continues to say that living seems higher in the
Midwest. A point of interest is, "Teachers here aren't hired
on yearly contracts, or given one. At the end of the year they
are fired and may be re-hired in the fall."
Did you all enjoy those great TV pictures from London?
Long live Elizabeth Regina! Another TV gem I happened to
catch as I was ironing, was Annie (Little Orphan) singing to
her dog-friend Sandy. She sang "Tomorrow" which is a hit
from the current Broadway musical. It made me think of
Tom Franks, and I wondered if he realizes that the title of his
column is being made famous.
l ast weekend I went to Portland to pick up a ten-year-old
grandson, Scott Haberlach, from the Seattle area, who will
be with us until June 27 or 28. Scott and I enjoyed the great
Saturday parade of the Rose Festival, the first I have seen in
person for years. Maybe lively Scotty will bring a new,
youthful prospective to our aging Weatherford lives. We
aren't at all accustomed anymore to living with a pre-teener.
Mrs. Alena Anderson returned from two weeks visiting in
Portland with her daughters, Dee Martin and Nancy Parent
and four granddaughters.
Dee took her mother to Portland after a Memorial weekend
visit here. Nancy brought her mother home last weekend.
Alena attended two high school graduations: her
granddaughter, Lisa Parent, was graduated by Oregon City
High School and granddaughter Suzanne Martin was
graduated by Wilson High School in Portland.
Mrs. Doris Cutting, now of Coquille, will be a guest in the
home of Ida Farra here next week. Doris and her husband,
Rev. Edwin Cutting, were with the Heppner United
Methodist Church before they were assigned to the church at
Coquille.
Doris has many friends in this county and in the Echo
community, where she and Mr. Cutting also served the
United Methodist Church.

Bike ride nets $$$
With sore seats and tired
legs more then 45 riders
participating in ESA's Million-Dollar-Bike-Ride
pedaled the
last few feet of the 22-mile trek
to help raise funds for St.
Jude's Children's Research
Hospital..
But it all seemed worthwhile
as volunteers learned from
Bike Ride Chairman Ellen
Kennedy that their efforts had
raised more than $1,700.
"We were so pleased with
the turn out and response of
the people," Mrs. Kennedy,
said. She mentioned people
like Jame Launer, who
volunteered his services, and
Marlene Gray, who ar
rived at checkpoint No. 2 with
water just in time so none left
thirsty.
All the riders
are now out collecting the
money pledged. Any questions
or further donations should be
directed to Ellen Kennedy
