formance at the state Class A
track and field championships
held Saturday at Lewis and
Clark College in Portland.
Three Mustang tracksters
placed among the top six
finishers in their events, set
ting one school record along
the way.

They won 10-2 over the Braves
Monday night to take over

The leading hitter for the
Indians for the season has
been Roger Morter. Steve
Millman has done a good job
at bat he had two hits in the

boys' track team to a first
place finish in a field of nine
teams at the combined Morrow-Umatilla
Counties meet
held May 19 at Blue Mountain

Ione's medley relay team of
Greg Rietmann, Scott Martin,
Duane Fetsch and Treve
Peterson set a new county
mark with a 2:51.7 first place
finish. The 440 relay team of
Peterson, Fetsch, Rietmann
and John Murray finished
second but still managed to set
a new school record of 50.8.
In individual events, Leslie
Thompson's 9'7" pole vault set
a new county mark and he was
followed by Rietmann in third
and Martin in fifth. Thompson
tied for first and gained a
share of the new county record
with a 15.8 showing in the
120-yard low hurdles. Fetsch
took third in the event.
Thompson placed second
place in both the high jump
and the 100-yard high hurdles.
His 16.1 timing in the hurdles
set a new school record and
his high jump tied the old

with a second place finish in
the 220, covering the distance
in 26.7. Healy's high jump of
5'2" placed third and she also
finished third in the 440 with a
time of 61.4. Her preliminary
440 time of 60.9 set a new
school mark. Healy's 20 points
place her in a second place tie
for individual girls' scoring.
The girls' 440 relay team of
Healy, Jackie Mollahan, Laur
ie Harrison and Tami Lucas
missed qualifying for the
finals and Diane Holland also
grab lead
League
loss to the Dodgers Saturday.
Millman is also a leading
fielder on the team.
The Braves have been led at
bat by Buddy Marlin who was
batting .500 through games of
last week. Pat Parker was
hitting at a .360 pace. Parker,
Marlin, and Brannon have
each been a winning pitcher
for the Braves. Brannon has
been one of the team's leading
fielders to date.
The Giants' leading batter is
Justin Lowe. Bruce and Mark
Way are also doing a good job
at the plate. Mark Way has
school mark. Rietmann plac
ed fifth in the high jump.
Peterson took top honors in
the 220 with a time of 25.9., and
placed fifth in the 100 with a
time of 11.8.
In the 880, Martin was
second across the line in 2:25.6
and Shawn LaRue was fourth.
LaRue also placed second in
the 1,320 with a time of 3:57.1
and Barnie Rey finished fifth
in 4:07.9.
The seventh grade boys had
one first place winner in John
Murray, who won the 220 in a
new county record time of
26.9. Other lone scoring came
from Murray's third place 100
run of 11.7 and Roger Morter's
fourth place 880 run of 2:44.9.
The 440 relay team, consisting
of Craig Gutierrez, Morter,
Casey Farger and Denny
Starr placed seventh. The
seventh grade team placed
seventh overall.
The lone eighth grade girls'
track team set a new school
record in the 1,320 medley
relay while finishing sixth
overall among ten teams
during junior high school
track action at BMCC. The
school record breaking team

competed in the javelin and
discus.
In the boys' competition,
Dave Allstott placed fourth in
the high jump with a leap of
6'3" but missed qualifying in
both the triple jump and long
jump. Marty Smith finished
sixth in the shot put with a
throw of 46'4 V and also
competed in the discus.
Although Carl Christman
didn't place in the pole vault,
his showing of 11'9" was a
lifetime best.
possibly provided the best
steadying influence in the field
for the Giants.
The last place Dodgers have
some heavy hitting in Jay
Hayes who is batting over .600
and Greg Connor who is
batting over .500. Steve
Crewse was the winning
pitcher in the 23-4 victory over
the Indians last Saturday. He
also had four hits. Dennis
Papineau turned in the best
fielding game of the year for
any Dodger as he played a fine
game at shortstop last Satur
day. Margaret Kincaid and Teena
Linstrom placed fifth in the
event with a time of 3:32.2.
Meyers also took second in
the 880 with a time of 2:50.1
and third in the 440 with a 71.4
clocking.
In the long jump, Kincaid's
14'3'4" leap was good for a
third place finish.
The seventh grade girls
scored well, finishing fourth in
the team standings.
The 1,320 relay team of
Mary Kincaid, Anita Palmer,
Diane Morter and Michelle
LaRue finished second with a
time of 3:42.1 while the 440
relay team consisting of Mor
ter, Kincaid, LaRue and Anne
Murray took third place in a
time of 62.7.
Margaret Doherty's season
best of 12.6 in the 100 was good
for a third place and her 220
run of 29.6 also placed her
third.
Lori Prock also recorded
her season best in the 880
where her time of 2:54.7 was
good for a fifth place finish.
Kincaid rounded out Ione's
scoring with second place high
jump of 4'4'2" and a 74.4
timing in the 440 which placed
her fifth.

Heppner turned a six-run
fifth inning into the winning
margin and went on to beat
Sherman 9-5, gaining a double
header split in high school
baseball action Thursday.
The Mustangs dropped the
first game of the twin bill 14-3.
Eleven batters went to the
plate during the big inning,
which began with a single by
Scott Groshens. Jim Kenny
then doubled and both runners
were knocked home by Dave

Season tickets for the 1977-78
Heppner High School football
schedule are now ready for
distribution. The price for the
five-game home slate is
$6.25 a savings of $1.25 over
the individual game price.
This year, season ticket
holders will also be entitled to
a 25 per cent reduction on the
purchase of volleyball game
tickets. Further information

Hunting season set
General buck season for the
Northwest Region will run this
year from Oct. 1 through Nov.
6, and the Southwest Region
season will run Oct. 1 through
30, according to the state Fish
and Wildlife Commission.
The commission has ap
proved a high Cascade buck
season for Sept. 10-18 and a
mule deer harvest for Oct.
15-23. The general mule deer

ferent story as Sherman
jumped off to a seven-run lead

hurlers tamed the Mustangs
with 12 strike-outs. One bright
spot was Allstott's triple in the
first.
The split left Heppner with
an 8-8 overall final record and
a 2-4 mark in Columbia Basin
Conference play.
