" I I r I I II II II II II II II II ii ii ii TWELVE The Gazette-Times, Heppner. Ore., Thursday, May 26, 1977 About ' with Justine Weatherford A very bright spot of last week, for me, was the mail from London from our neighbor and friend, Marsha Lovgren, who was a junior in one of the first senior English classes I taught here. Marsha mailed her letter and a double page from the London Daily Mail on May 12 and it got to me May 17. She says she was especially busy "with the President's arrival" and that London was getting some belated spring sunshine. "Haven't done too much traveling lately. Went to Istanbul for four days the first part of March. Enjoyed the sights and the contrast with European culture. Went to the major mosques the 'Blue' mosque, Saint Sofia (built by Justinian the Great between AD 532 and 537) and Topkapi. I also took a boat ride up the Bosphorus River toward the Black Sea and another trip south in the Maramara Sea to Prince's Islands... very interesting place, but I don't think I'd want to live there. "Hope things are fine with you and yours. I enjoy reading your column in the G-T. Was sorry to hear that the city budget didn't pass. ..I'll be coming home in November and returning to London in January for another two years. Will see you all then." The double page contains pictures of "the fastest-growing craze of the seventies" skateboarding. It states that America dreamed up all the thrills of surfing without waiting for waves. Marsha sent it because she recalled that I had asked her if the British were into skateboarding. She writes that now "They have coverage on TV requesting that special paths be opened for skateboarders, are having lots of contests and that some people put sails on them and use them like a sailboat." Besides the centerfold pictures and writeup on the "wheelies," this May 6 section of the Mail has an article about the woman "once tipped to wed Trudeau," about a TV actress who will marry a Dunhill heir and a most interesting bit about David Frost and R. Nixon, with the caption "Frostie and Tricky" under their picture. London reporter Nigel Dempster says "Frostie, who has been left twice at the altar will soon be making matrimonial noises in the direction of his constant companion Caroline dishing. A former British deb and twice married, twice divorced, Caroline has been with him for almost three years." Marsha's parents, Edda Mae and Marshall, our city recorder, returned from Portland the end of last week with the hope that her mother's illness will soon be corrected. With the fun news from the U.K., it is rather hard to get back to the reality of assorted civic problems here. I guess I shall try harder to put them aside while we get caught up in local activities such as weddings, school concerts, graduation events, the Memorial Day holiday, and the constantly necessary housekeeping and garden work.
