1 in the 17th century. Aren't they appropriate? Have you read
; other lines surpassing Milton's?
As May began, we hope you received a May Day basket.
We don't think you saw many Maypole dancers. Mother's
Day this year came on the earliest date it could possibly
come. It is officially set for the second Sunday of May, and
May 1 was a Sunday. Did you notice many flags flying?
' Mother's Day is the first of May's three "flag days."
Maybe more flags will be out a week from next Saturday,
' May 21, which is Armed Forces Day. In Heppner, it is also
' the Methodist Lawn Sale Day, but as important as that event
is, it hasn't yet become an official flag day.
We expect the greatest flag flying of the month on May 30,
Memorial or Decoration Day. Protocol says that on that day,
flags are to be at half-staff until noon and then full-height.
That is the day after the annual Pioneer Picnic at the County
Fairgrounds.

May is a super month for sporting events, with the
Kentucky Derby, the Indianapolis 500, the Portland
Trailblazers competing in their second playoff series, spring
school sports terminating in state contests, and the Morrow
County Little League going strong.
Graduation Days come soon in this area. It is always
exciting, but rather sad, to have young people released from
schools to go off to face much greater problems. We all know
the real wealth of our nation is its youth. We always wish
them well ; we always hope they will come back to their roots
occasionally and will remember favorably the community
where they spent their youthful days.
I We believe that Heppner's Main Street Park is getting
more use this year than it has ever had. We wonder if and
-when the already dedicated Hager Park will get shaped up so
that it can be enjoyed?
Our recent rains may, unfortunately, have been a little late
$o really help some county crops, but my, how they brought
up the weeds around our flower beds and vegetable garden.
We know that the rains brought relief to soon-to-be-retired
Heppner District Ranger Sam Miller and his forest-protecting
crews. Surely the start of what may be a big forest fire
Reason was set back considerably. Way back, we all hope.
