Card boys double up for win
Cards net win
For the third consecutive
year, Ione's boys doubles
team walked away with the
top position in the District 7A
tennis tournament in Pendle
ton on Saturday.
., . The District 7A consists of
Condon, Helix, Oregon Trail,
lone, Pilot Rock, Riverside,
'Sherman County, Umatilla
rand Weston-McEwen.
J, Dennis Stefani-Dan McElli-
,gott, two underclassmen,
teamed for the glory. The duo
entered the competition as the
number two seed behind Wes
Harrison-Gary Hemenway of
Pilot Rock.
Both those duos had a bye in
round one. In round two,
Stefani-McElligott won on a
forfeit while Harrison
Hemenway beat a pair from
Umatilla, 2-6, 7-5 and 6-3. '
In the semifinal round,
Stefani-McElligott did away
with Scott Witt-Tim Monjay of
Riverside, 6-1 and 6-2. Har-rison-Hemenway
also ad
vanced with a 6-3 and 6-2
triumph over fifth seed, Todd
Rohde-Jeff Van Gorder of
Oregon Trail.
In the championship, Stefani-McElligott
had to use
three sets, but upended the
favorites from Tilot Rock, 1-6,
6-1 and 6-3.
In other matches, Susan
Thompson advanced to the
finals and placed third.
Thompson beat Cathy Green
of Riverside in the first round,
6-1 and 6-0. In the second
round, Maxine Marcum was
Thompson's victim, 6-3 and
6-4. In the semis, Jennifer
Bauman beat Thompson 6-3
and 6-3. Bauman went on to
beat Debbi Freeman of Uma
tilla for the title, 6-1 and 6 1.
Thompson defeated Darla
Power of Oregon Trail for
third, 6-4 and 6-2.
In other action, Arlene
Cannon fell to Kim McMillan
of WM, 2-6, 3-6 in the first
round. In girls' doubles, Jan
Peterson-Kim Cofenas fell to
number one seed, Susan Rin-ey-Leah
Potter in round one,
6-1 and 6-0. Carol McElli-gott-Natalie
Tews fell to the
third seeded Rachor-Knox of
WM, 6-3 and 6-1.
In boys' singles, Rick Gil
bert dropped an upset match
to Greg Tarpening of River
side in split sets, 5-7, 6-4 and
6-7.

Danny McElligott underwent
surgery for an appendectomy
Sunday. Stefani will play
singles.
Gilbert, Thompson, and the
duo of Stefani-McElligott will
compete in the sub-district
tourney in Pendleton May 6-7.
The sub-district is comprised
of Pendleton, MacHi, Hermis
ton, Ontario, Weston-McEw-en,
Pilot Rock, Nyssa, Vale,
Umatilla, Oregon Trail, lone,
LaGrande, Baker and River
side. The top four places in each
division qualify for district, to
be played in Bend later this
month.
Martha Doherty, lone
coach, said Stefani-McElligott
may get a sixth or seventh
seed and hope to qualify for
one of the district berths.
With a shut-out by the boys,
Ione's Cardinal net squad
came away from Oregon Trail
Thursday with a dual meet tie.
lone boys won, 3-0, and the
girls lost, 4-1, for a team knot
at 4-4.
In boys' action, Dennis
Stefani bounced Stan Stephens
in first singles, 6-3, 4-6 and 7-5.
Stefani teamed with Dan Mc
Elligott in first doubles and
did away with Todd Rohde
Jeff Van Gorder, 6-4 and 6-2.
Clint Carlson-Stuart Keene
added another second doubles
triumph, this one a 6-3 and 6-2
win over Ed Albrecht-Dean
Marcum.
