Card netters beat
Pilot Rock, 6-5
Using a boys' win, 4-2, Ione's
netters slipped past Pilot Rock
Saturday in tennis action with
a 6-5 team triumph.
The Cards had to rely on the
boys' 4-2 team win after the
girls fell, 3-2.
The Card boys won a pair of
singles and two doubles
matches. Dennis Stefani and
Danny McElligott played
parts in three of those wins.
Stefani took on the PR
second singles player, Dave
Pedro, and came home with a
decisive, 6-0 and 6-2 win. Clint
Carlson worked Jim Kinkead
to a 6-4 and 6-2 submission
before the doubles squads
went to work.
Stefani teamed with McEl
ligott for a 4-6, 6-2 and 7-6 tie
breaker win over Wes Han-sen-Gary
Hemminway. Then
McElligott and first singles
player, Rick Gilbert, teamed
for a 6-3, 4-6 and 7-5 win in
third doubles over Bo Liebe
Warren Wolf gram.
In other matches, Rick
Gilbert fell in first singles to
Tom Pilch, 6-4 and 6-0; Clint
Carlson-Stuart Keene fell to
Jim Reger-Tom Nielson, 5-7,
6-2 and 6-3.
On the girls' side, lone
picked up wins from a singles

Union and Powder Valley
split eight first places to earn
first and second while Hep
pner and Elgin tied for third in
the Mike Halloran Girls' In
vitational track and field meet
in Wallowa Saturday.
Maureen Healy won two
firsts, a second and a third to
lead the Fillies to a third place
tie. Union won the meet with
38, followed by Powder Valley
37, Heppner 31, Elgin 31,
. Wallowa 20, Pine Eagle 15,
Imbler 14, Enterprise 12,
Ukiah 7, Joseph 6, Cove 5,
: Prairie City 4.
Healy was first in the high
jump, tying a season best at
5-3 and was first in the 440 in
? 62.8. She was second in the 220
' at 25.8 and though she led the
" state A hurdlers until Satur
day, finished third in 16.4 in
the 110 yard steps.
Tammy Lucas took a third
in the long jump, and followed
with thirds in the 100 yard
dash and 220. Jackie Mollahan
was third in the high jump and
' fifth in the javelin.
Laurie Harrison picked up a
: fourth in the 100, and Diane
Holland was fifth in the disc.
Powder Valley's Carla Tay
j lor stole the show, garnering
four individual firsts. She was
first in the long jump at 15-3,

25.7 clocking.
6-1. Kim Cofenas fell in singles
while the doubles unit of Carol
McElligott-Natalie Tews, and
Jan Peterson-Tammy Tucker
dropped matches.
Heppner's thinclads are ful
filling a promise. .a promise to
the rest of Eastern Oregon
that the Mustangs are a
powerhouse on the track and
in the field.
They helped make believers
' of 11 other schools Saturday,
besting a field of Wapati
league reps in the Mike
Halloran Invitational in Wal
lowa. The Mustangs outdistanced
the 12 team field with but a
single first place. Depth, in the
form of five seconds and five
thirds turned the trick for the
winning Mustangs.
Heppner was first with 50
points on what HHS Coach
Dale Conklin termed a "super
day with some super per
formances." Second place
went to hosting Wallowa at
44, followed by Elgin and
Enterprise with 38, Joseph
at 31, Union 21, Imbler 19,
Pine Eagle 13, Prairie City 7,
Powder Valley 1, Ukiah 0.
As far as Dale Conklin is
concerned, Heppner is the
Wapati champion, besting the
league's track and field pro
grammed schools.
It was a day of personal
bests where one Heppner
school record tumbled and
another was equalled.
Dave Allstott flew over the
high jump bar, 6-44 feet off
the ground. It established a
new school mark, cracking the
one set in 1975 by Dave
McLeod at 6-3. Allstott's
record was good for one of five
second places.
Another second tied the
school record in the premiere
sprinter's dash. Carl Christ
man, a late starter this spring,
screamed 100 yards in 10.2,
tying the clocking of Ed
Howard from 1962. Bryan
Marlin ran 10.3 for third.
The only first came via the
strong arm of Marty Smith,
who ejected the shot 46 feet,
bettering second place by
almost five feet.
Other personal bests high
lighted the triumph. Behind
Allstott in the high jump,
Heppner flexed their depth
muscles with a 6 foot leap by
sophomore David Piper.
Marlin's 10.3 in the 100 was a
personal best and Mike Jones'
fifth place finish in the 220, in
24.2, was a best.
First place, plus Heppner
finishes, follow:
