Earth Week prompts clean-up

exchange vows
Students in schools all over the area are
giving back to the earth this week in celebration
of Oregon's Earth Week-April 21-27.
Boardman junior and senior high school
students spent Tuesday on an ecological
indoctrination which most participants describ
ed as "fun." Dismissed from regular classes, the
young people spent their regular eight hours
involved in ecology workshops conducted by
their teachers.
Much of the learning was done on a
one-to-one basis. That individualized style of
learning came through litter pick up, tree
planting, shrubbery cultivation and weed
removal projects which ran throughout the day.
Trees, including wild plum, honey locust and
mulberry bushes were contributed to the school
by the Umatilla Wildlife Refuge.
The day began with a film on the protection of
natural waterways, the theme of the 1977
Oregon Earth Week.
Many of the students were speaking seriously
of joining environmental groups like the Sierra
Club, Ducks Unlimited and the National Wildlife
Federation. "The kids are looking at why they
are cleaning up and what can be done so it won't
always be necessary," said Riverside High
School Principal Dan Daltoso.
"These kids are learning that we have to be
responsible for whatever mess we make and our
neighbors' mess as well, if he won't clean it up
we do. Or we will just have to live with it.
Students were finding more than litter on the
grounds surrounding their school. Collections of
inch-long scorpions were being started. The
students had plans to study them in their
science classes.
In years past, the student body usually took

on the entire town of Boardman as its cleaning
project. But due to a large amount of
construction, school officials frit the compaign
would be most effectively executed on the school
grounds.
Richard Brittain, Riverside Junior High
student, had been planting trees all morning.
The youth looked as though he might have
literally thrown himself into his work.
"Yeah, it's pretty neat cleaning up around the
school; we should do it more often," he said,
pouring a load of sand out of one of his shoes.
"But not every day."
