Condon, Wahtonka and Was
co County can only thank their
lucky stars that the Fillies
came in eights this week. With
less than two handfuls of
female athletes, Rebecca
Randall coached Heppner
took third Tuesday night in a
four way meet in Condon.
Wasco County won the meet
with 62 points, followed by
Wahtonka at 57, Heppner 52
and Condon 6.
Maureen Healy won three
events and was second in
another to lead the way.
Laurie Harrison sprinted to a
12.2 clocking a first in the 100
yard dash.
Healy was first in the 220 at
26.9, the 1)0 hurdles at 16.05
(currently leading state A
thinclads, see story) and the
440 in 1.03.3).
Healy was second in the
high jump at 5-3, behind the
leader, Smith of Wahtonka at
5-4. Tammy Lucas was second
to Harrison in the 100, racing
the distance in 12.25. Hep
pner's mile relay team also
was second.

jump, third long jump; Janice
Healy: third shot put; Sally
Sumner, third 880; Lucas,
fourth long jump; Heppner 440

Allstott
awarded
Despite missing all but two
games this hoop season, Hep
pner High School senior Dave
Allstott has been granted a full
scholarship to Skagit Valley
Community College in Mt.
Vernon.
Allstott was tabbed for his
basketball skills by the re
cruiting staff of the school,
located north of Seattle. Skag
it Valley was second in Wash-
ington small college rankings
last season. Allstott's schol
arship is for two years.

Mountain Community College
taught tennis have been open
ed in response to a large
turnout in the area.

Cards bounce Riverside
Using a 3-1 girls' win and a 2-2 boys' tie, Ione's Cardinal
-netters recorded their first match win of the season Tuesday,
dusting a ragged Riverside tennis team, 5-3.
Behind two doubles wins and Susan Thompson's first singles
win over Kathy Hilling, Ione's girls slipped away from their
guests, 3-1.
Thompson smacked Hilling, 6-1 and 6-2 to set the pace. Cathy
Green came up with the lone Pirette win over Kim Cofenas in
second singles, 8-4.
Carol McElligott-Natalie Tews outdistanced Judie Danies
Joan Partlow, 6-4 and 6-4. Tammy Tucker-Jan Peterson teamed
for an 8-1 pro-set win over Lori Witt-Tammie Rock.
Ione's boys won a doubles and a singles match and lost a
doubles and a singles match. Rick Gilbert fell in first singles to
John Danies, 6-4 and 6-2. Then he jumped into the second singles
ring with Greg Tarpening and stopped the Riverside netter, 8-4
in a pro-set.
Dennis Stefani-Dan McElligott teamed for a close split set
triumph over Dan Bozarth-Tim Monjay, 3-6, 7-6 and 7-6.
Scott Witt-Eugene Stacy stopped Stuart Keene-Clint Carlson,
8-5.
Morrow County Babe Ruthers, eyeing late April sign-ups,
will play a 23 game schedule this year in the Hermiston Babe
Ruth Association.
Eight of those games will be at home in lone or Heppner.
The season will start in the last week in May and end six
weeks later in the first week of July.
April 27-28 has been set up for sign-up of youths, age 13-15
who won't be older than 15 by Aug. 1 of this year. lone players
can sign-up at Beecher's on April 27 at 7 p.m. The following
evening, April 28, Heppner diamond niners can sign-up at 7
p.m. at the grade school multi-purpose room in Heppner.
Athletes must have a parent with them and a $10
registration fee. A birth certificate of some kind is also
necessary.
The Ruthers will be sponsored again by Morrow County
Grain Growers, Elks' Lodge, and Odd Fellows. Jim Swanson
will manage the team.

Mustang track unit to a second
place finish in the 17 team
Condon Invitational Saturday.
Joseph, a school with no
baseball program, took home
the hardware with 90 points.
Less than four points back at
87, Heppner was second. The
Mustangs led the event
through 15 of the 17 events,
dropping the title in the mile
run and mile relay.

pistol with a 44-10's effort in
the shot and a 128-6 try in the
LL try-outs

Little League try-outs are
set for I p.m. Saturday at the
fairgrounds, according to Wil

son. A work day for the parents
is slated to begin at 10 a.m. on
Saturday. All interested per

school record in the triple
jump, leaping 42-4'8, erasing
his own old mark of 40-8.
Bryce Powell picked up the
only second place tally in the
meet, with a 44 second clock
ing in the 330 yard inter
mediate hurdles.
Riverside picked up a pair
of firsts, one a surprise and
impressive pole vault effort.
John Johnson used the pole to
go 12-6 Saturday, causing
Mustang coach Dale Conklin
to say it may be one of the top
pole vault efforts by an 'A'
class athlete this year.
Along with Johnson, Luke
Maynard picked up a high
hurdles win in 16.2. Maynard
is currently listed as the
fastest high hurdler in the
' district.
