Gervais didn't let a long
road trip hamper their style
this week, dumping Heppner's
Mustangs in their opener, then
routing Elgin in the champ
ionship of the tenth annual
Pilot Rock baseball tourney
Saturday.
Gervais finished the four
team tourney with first place
honors, followed by Elgin,
Heppner and Pilot Rock.
Heppner dumped Pilot Rock
in the consolation round, 6-1
for third.
Gervais collected nine hits
in their first contest, slipping
past Heppner 14-10 to advance
to the championship. Mean
while, Elgin dusted back Pilot
Rock in a defensive battle, 4-3.
Elgin was blanked in the
championship, held to one hit,
en route to their 7-0 loss.
Heppner bounced back with a
6-1 victory over PR, using
Dennis Peck's abilities on the
mound.
Heppner tried to get by
Gervais in the first game with
a six hit effort. Kindal Thomas
paced the Mustang bats with a
two for four try, lashing a
double in the first inning and a
single in the second.
The Mustangs jumped on
the first half of the first inning,
batting around and sending all
nine players across the plate
with runs.
Thomas doubled a 2-1 pitch
to start off the inning. Jim
Kenny singled, Peck walked
and clean-up sticker Dave
Allstott singled, worth a pair
of runs-batted-in. Bruce
Young and Dale Holland
walked, Worden singled, then
a pair of errors put Jack
Yocum and Curtis Sweek on
base.
At the end of the wild inning,
Heppner held a 9-0 lead, but it
Rawlins finishes
in top half
Charlie Rawlins finished in
the top half of a field of 70 in
the four course, two weekend
Statesman Journal Golf Tour
nament. Rawlins finished the 72 hole
tourney at 318, an average of
794. His 76-79 this weekend
made up for poor weather
conditions last weekend.
In the opening round last
weekend, Rawlins fired a 163
over McNary Golf Course in
Salem and Santiam Golf
Course. Wind and rain marred
the performances.
This weekend, under blue
skies and sunshine, Rawlins
came back with a 76 at Salem

A big turnout and sunshine
greeted the Wranglers' first
playday of the season Sunday.
The competition was high
lighted with the presentation
of prizes for high point win
ners in each age group.

Six and under age group:
Mike Mahoney; Seven, eight
and nine year olds: Jason
Dougherty; Ten-13 year olds:
Cliff Dougherty; 14-17 year
olds: Donna Palmer; 18-29
year olds: Dawn Peterson;
over 30 years: Bob Steagall.

Heppner 6, P Rock 1
Dave Allstott, Dennis Peck, and Bruce Young each belted a
pair of singles in the same innings to spark Heppner to a
consolation triumph, their first win of the year, over Pilot Rock
Saturday, 6-1.
Peck went the distance for the Mustangs, giving up one run
and four hits in the seven innings. He k'ed nine Pilot Rock
batters en route to his first win.
The win came via timely hits.
After Worden scored in the second after walking, an error and
a Kindal Thomas single, the Mustangs went to work in team
fashion.
Peck started the third with a single, then Allstott walked. Both
scored on an error and a single by Young.
In the fourth, Kenny used an error to reach first, then moved
around with an Allstott single, a fielder's choice goof that put
Worden on, and another single by Young.
At the end of four innings, Heppner held a 6-0 lead. Pilot Rock
scored in the sixth when Barbar singled and Neal sacrificed him
home.
Heppner's defense was highlighted in the second inning. Neal
used the only four balls Peck threw to a batter to reach first
safely. An error put Post on, but quick actions by catcher Dale
Holland and Don McEwen at third turned a double play and
thwarted the PR rally attempt.

Kegler's Korner
Fiesta Bowl pounded Morrow County Grain Growers in all
four games last week to secure the first place nod in Kegler's
Korner action at Fiesta Bowl.
Fiesta Bowl moved into a four game lead at 36-16, dropping
second place MCGG to 32-20. Gardner's lost four games to
Coast-to-Coast and Peterson's continued their winning ways,
dusting Central Market in three games.
Fran Crook, subbing for Gardner's, rolled a 199 to take high
individual game. Mary Kennison rolled a 537 high series for
Central Market.
Coast-to-Coast stayed in the cellar, but came up with a
good effort and took the high series at 2618 and the high game
of 908.
Splits picked up included Irene Samples with the 3-7-10,
Roxie Lovgren on the 5-7 and Phyllis Cole picked up the
4-5-2-10 split.

Gervais came pounding
back with their own style of
offense. In their half of the
first, Gervais generated five
runs on two hits, one a double
by Leach.
Gervais shut the Mustangs'
batters down with a new
pitcher in the second and third
innings, one-two-three. In the
fourth, one man reached first
with a walk, but in the fifth
and sixth, it was one-two-three
again.
Meanwhile, Gervais was
still popping away at the plate.
In the second, Gervais picked
up one run via a walk, two
stolen bases and a wild pitch.
Allstott started on the
mound for Heppner and went
two innings before Worden
moved in to replace him.
In the third, Gervais used
five hits for seven runs to take
a 13-9 lead. Five singles,
back-to-back smacks twice,
propelled the Gervais base
runners around the path.
In the fourth, Gervais used
back-to-back singles again to
earn one run and take a de
cisive, 14-9 edge.
Heppner scored one run in
the seventh when Kenny
reached first on a second
baseman's error. He scored on
a Peck double and an Allstott
sacrifice.
Allstott and Worden com
bined to gain seven strikeouts.
Worden had four k's. Gervais
earned three runs in the ball
game.
