Central Market dusts Petersons
Central Market dusted the
cellar dweller and Fiesta Bowl
and Morrow County Grain
Growers split last week, caus
ing another three team race
for honors in the Kegler's
Korner action at Fiesta Bowl
in Heppner.
Central, who dropped into a
tie last week for first, re
gained their league lead with
four wins over Peterson Jew
elers. Central holds a two
game lead over Fiesta Bowl
and MCGG, who each settled
for a split and a tie for second.
Gardner's took three games
from Coast-lo-Coast, moving
to within six games of second
place with a 17-19 record.
Gardner's rolled past Coast-to-Coast
with a team high
series of 2610.
Klaus,
Crook
take honors
in LaGrande
Roberta Klaus and Fran Crook came away from the
LaGrande 600 Club bowling tournament last week with
cash prizes and silver.
Mrs. Klaus took first place in the four game singles
competition with an 893, handicap series. Along with
that win, she garnered the high series scratch honors
with a 725, good for a silver plaque.
Mrs. Crook finished just three pins behind Klaus, at
890, to take the second place glory in the singles
division.
Also bowling in the tourney with Klaus and Crook
was Anita Cantin.
The lone win out of the four
that Coast-to-Coast picked up
was with a high team game of
929.
Numerous bowlers picked
up splits in competition last
week. Danonne Nelson and
Roberta Klaus picked up 3-10
splits; Jackie Allstott and
Verna Brinda took care of 5-10
splits; Darlene Arrington con
nected on a 5-9 split; and Fran
Crook cracked a 4-7-10 split.
Individual high game and
series was handled by Roberta
Klaus. She had a 185 high
game and a 469 series.

team is listed in third place
after two weeks of the 16 week
34th Annual Oregon State
Women's Bowling Association
tournament in Pendleton.
The five woman team from
Heppner was one of the first
teams to start the competi
tion. The team consists of
Jackie Allstott, Danonne Nel
son, Barbara Strahm, Diane
Stickner, and Rhonda Lorenz.
The ladies "felt like we did
real good," Allstott said this
week, noting that the team's
2037 team series was still
ranked third in the "C" team

Dennis Stefani was tabbed
to the second team, all-Big-

sophomore guard from lone
averaged 12.2 points a game
this season.
Along with Stefani, Kevin
McCabe and Robin LaRue re
ceived honorable mention
status. McCabe led the Car
dinal rebounding with a seven
carom average. He also had a
nine point scoring balance
LaRue, a lanky sophomore
like the other two, was third in
rebounding, points and assists
for lone. Stefani was the
play-maker, picking up 52
assists on the year.
Big Sky first team yielded
Gary Smythe and Matt Weth
erall, Arlington; Dan Green
field, Wheeler; Rick Emerick,
Helix; and Russ Hoan, Culver.
On the girls' side, lone
placed three girls in the
honorable mention category.
Lisa Martin, Grace and Mar
tha McElligott were tabbed to
that group.
Little League
try-outs near
Grab your mitts and
oil 'em good. Little
League tryouts are right
around the corner.
Tryouts have been
scheduled for Apr. 2 and
16 at 1 p.m. at the
Heppner Little League
field. A player must be
nine-years-old by Aug. 1
and cannot be 13 before
Aug. 1. 1977.
..Farm team tryouts
for eight-year-olds will
be held at a later date.

Missionaries of the game of Gaelic football have, at times,
tried to popularize it thoughout Europe, and in other! places,
without success. Folks gaze in awe at what happens duri-g
an exhibition of this form of sport, and since most of them are
interested in living a few years longer, they refuse to become
players. But they never fail to go into raptures over the wild
action, and the terrific body collisions, which they witness as
spectators, and which the Irish players classify as "a bit of
fun."
One could only wonder how carried away Howard Cosell
could get at a Gaelic football game. "Well, ladies and
gentlemen, today's battle can only be termed a brutal,
pugilistic velitation which has never, I repeat never, before
been witnessed as a sport by yours truly. To think that grown
adult men would don feathered caps and go about their
brawling monomachy in this manner, is undubitably
ridiculous. This is Howard Cosell, and let me tell you this,
ladies and gentlemen, as I sign off for whoever I'm working
for this week, that this aceldama, this Armageddon, this
internecine strife, can only go down in history as a
Donnybrook, one of true rupture, like as with military
operations, a campaign for bloodshed in the world of sports.

ijij mid-season, but she opted to finish out the season. She took
ijij the Most Inspirational award because of her courage and her
jiji spirit on the court.
jij: Kenny was a leader on the bench and in the huddle as well
ij: as on the floor barking out commands.
jjj: Darla Cooper came on strong at the end of the season to
ijij where she had gone from third team guard to a starting roll
jiji against Pilot Rock in a crucial contest.
jiji Cooper moved inside through the season and began taking
jij: down a few rebounds, along with her improving defense and
ijij shooting skills.
ijij Randall introduced her entire girls' team and praised each
jij: one.

Skow, who earned a reputation for flying into crowded jij:
bleachers after loose basketballs, liked to act as a big man at jij
times. When he wasn't jumping like a big man, he was jij
driving the lane. His sometimes unorthodox leaps charged a jjj
crowd and a basketball team. iji
Borgen praised all his players, one by one, in front of the jjj:
