Eckmsiini slap
Behind a 12 point effort by McLaughlin, Eckman's city
league squad retained their undefeated status and walked
away with a 5-0 city league title Sunday.
Eckman bounced Ball, 54-41, knocking Ball out of a tie for
second with Sands.
McLaughlin had 12 points before fouling out of the contest,
but it was Ball's Laverne Van Marter who took game honors
with 18 points. Besides McLaughlin, Keith Curnutt,
Lankford, Kenny Eckman and David Eckman each had eight
points.

Riverside junior varsity
took advantage of the charity
stripe and sunk 18 free throws
to boost them past Heppner's
JVs Saturday, 52-41.
Heppner made nine of 22 gift
tosses while the Pirates can

17-16.
Curtis Sweek led Heppner
with 10 points. Mark and Dave
Piper each added seven.
Riverside was paced by

break the trail, 59-31.

ball through the hoop to excite
the crowd just before inter

decisive, 72-32 blast of winless Pointer.
(If Ball had edged Eckman, it would have put Eckman,
Ball and Sands in a three way tie for first.)
Sands finished the five game schedule with a 4-1 record,
falling to Eckman, 44-22 in their third game. Big 6-7 Mike
Egland pulled down the rebounds and Jamie Sands hit from
the outside and with a fast break.
Sands poured in 20 points and Egland 16 in the contest. John

It was never close.
Heppner's Fillies pounded
Ione's Cardinal girls in a
non-conference clash last
Thursday to the tune of 55-11.
The Filly hammers kept
pounding until 11 girls had
scored in the 44 point rout.
It was a dismal start for
lone that didn't get much
brighter. Heppner skunked
the Cards in the first period
and by the end of two, held a
26-1 halftime edge.
lone mustered five point
quarters in the third and
fourth, but Heppner poured it
on with 29 second half tallies.
Jackie Mollahan and Maur
een Healy, both sophomores,
led Heppner with nine points
each. Janet McElligott led
lone with six.

bucket. Marvin Lane, Sands' second big man, had eight
points, John McCabe had 10 and Mike Smith added six.
Doug Gunderson canned four fielders from the outside to
lead Pointer with eight points.
In a game that boosted Ernst to fourth place, Ernst slipped
past Greenup, 46-44. Ernst held the field goal edge and
Greenup had the ball with four seconds to play, but missed a
shof from the field.

Honkers get wings, fly
It was close for a quarter,
but when the tip-off started the
second quarter, Arlington's
Honkers took to the air and
bombed the Cardinal bucket
with basketballs to the tune of
76-29.
The Cards stayed with the
high flying Honkers for a
period, ending the eight min
utes in a draw at eight points
each. But in the second,
Arlington, behind Jeff Bett
singer's 18 and Mike Amsel's
15, doubled the Cards' hand,
16-8.
Arlington turned a 24-16
halftime edge into a route by
the end of three periods, 50-21.
The fourth period wasn't any
sweeter.

Parker's 24 goes in vain
Jim Parker slammed Riverside defenders with 24 points, but
Griffin and Daulton teamed up for the Pirates for 31 points to
lead Riverside to a 50-36 victory.
Parker was Heppner freshmen's only bright spot, leading all
scorers. Larry Palmer added five points.
Heppner was outdistanced in the first period, 12-6, then trailed
at halftime, 27-16.

Poor first half blamed
A poor first half spoiled a fourth period rally last Tuesday and
Heppner's frosh dropped a 45-40 contest to Pilot Rock.
Jim Parker led all scorers with 20 points. Steve Marlatt scored
eight points and yanked down nine rebounds. Ron Young also
had nine caroms.
Heppner fell back, 20-14, in the first half, then came within five
with 20 points in the final stanza.
