Pirates take over ship;

The first half was your basic disaster.
Riverside's Pirates took over the Mustang ship and
whipped the horses to submission, 68-49, Saturday.
The Mustangs kicked up their heels in the second half, but
still had the Pirates on their backs at the final buzzer.

Riverside rode Heppner to a 37-23 first half drubbing, then
tacked five more points onto the margin in the second half.
Dennis Peck came out of a scoring slump to lead Heppner.
The sophomore guard hit eight fielders for 16 points to lead
all scorers. Mark Huddleston and Carl Christman pitched in
seven each.
The Pirates put three men in double figures. Doug Price
had 15, followed by Luke Maynard with 14 and Gayle Phillips
with 10.
Riverside took eight points from Heppner from the field,
canning 24 fielders to the Mustangs' 20. At the line, the
Pirates mounted another attack, dropping 20 of 37 from the
stripe. Heppner settled for 21 tries and made nine.
Peck was eight for 18 on the night, hitting six of 10 from the
field in the second half. Heppner fired 20 for 68 in the game.
Riverside popped the net 24 times in 60 tries.
Both squads had 44 rebounds. Kevin Haguewood brought
nine caroms down and Marlin added seven.

Umapine for their lone win of
the season last month.
lone jumped out to a 25-17
first half lead, but saw it fall
when Umapine, led by Joe
Estes' 18 points, outshot the
Cards in the second half,
canning 13 of 34 field goals.
Both teams ended up the
night hitting 21 fielders. lone
took 60 shots and hit 35 per
cent while Umapine took 69
tries and made 30 per cent.
Umapine depended on the
charity stripe. Although the
Cards were whistled for just 10
fouls, Umapine went to the
line 13 times and canned nine.
"Heading for Beecher't"
lone used 16 Umapine fouls to
make three of seven from the
line.
Dennis Stefani led lone with
13 points and seven assists.
Robin LaRue had 12 points, six
rebounds and three assists.

Arietta Aldrich led the
Cards with seven points. Sue
Pugh paced Arlington with 15
points and drew praise from

lone started the contest with
six girls. One fouled out and
two were moved up for varsity
before the contest was over.
With three minutes to play
in the game, lone held a 20-18
lead with a hustling three
some. The Card girls led
throughout the second half
after building a 10-4 halftime
lead.
Free throws kept the Cards
in the game in the second half.
Of the 12 second half lone
points, half came from the
charity stripe.
Darcy Rea hit a pair of gift
tosses to give lone a 22-18 edge
before Laurie Harrison sunk a
10 footer from the side of
Heppner.
lone turned the ball over
with 2:16 remaining, but
Heppner followed with their
own style of turnover.
A foul ensued, but Janet
McElligott missed the shot.
She stole the ball away,
though, and was fouled again.
She missed once more, but
the clock kept ticking away.
Heppner was called for lane
violations, four times in the
last 25 seconds and lone
walked away with a happy,
and unorthodox win.
Lisa Martin paced lone with
nine points. Julie Grieb had
five for Heppner.

A do or die situation.
5 Ione's Cardinal girls, although they don't
j boast an impressive season record with just
three wins, are still in the running for a
'district berth.
' The Cards, 1-2 in league play, are knotted
with Helix. Both teams trail 3-1 Arlington,
lone faces Helix Friday to determine
second place and the second district tourney
spot. District is set for Feb. 25-26 in The
Dalles.
Ione's lone league win was over Helix in
their first confrontation in lone, 34-16. lone
goes to Helix for the crucial encounter
Friday.
