Have you got your Valentines ready to go? Do you always
recall that your state celebrates its birthday on Feb. 14? This
33rd state, Oregon, the Valentine State, is 118 years old this
year.
Former County Judge Oscar Peterson, lone, took a look at a
big part of South America and is now telling others about what
he saw. He spoke to the Chamber of Commerce Monday.
We hear that last Thursday's Old Timers' Night brought a big
crowd to the Elks' Club. They enjoyed a dandy chicken dinner
prepared by the Elks' ladies.

It is nice to have Irene Swanson back in town after three
weeks of visiting in Portland and Oswego. She is now helping the
Neighborhood Center move into new quarters.
Carpet-laying professional Arnie Hedman and temporary
helpers Bill Lande and Ed Struthers contributed an evening's
work to the Public Library this last week. The Coast-to-Coast
store loaned a Rinse-N-Vac machine the next night when Ed and
Bill went back to clean the donated, used carpeting in the
Children's Room.
John McConnell, a 1936 Heppner grad, has returned from
Wallowa County and is working at the Kinzua Mill. He is asking
around for a small apartment. Finding housing is surely
difficult these days.
For many years, Eleanor Gonty has been such a faithful
helper in the family shoe store. We hope she is enjoying being
home a little more these days. She continues to help many
organizations and many good causes.
It was good to read that Mayor Sweeney feels Heppner will not
suffer too badly from a water shortage. We worry about our
cattle and wheat raising friends in such a difficult time.
lone, Lexington and Boardman-Irrigon have correspondents
who supply news and small personal items to this paper. This
column wants to include "personals" from the Heppner area.

the Pioneer Memorial Hos
pital's Nursing Home on
Valentine's Day.

hospital at 2 p.m. for visiting
and to share the mudc of their
pianist, Ola Mae Groshens.
The Blue Birds, under the
leadership of Trish Toll, will

in 1886. Harold's father was
Ralph. Until recently, Har
old's uncle, Charlie Beckett,
operated that place (part of
the family spells the name
differently). Charlie's widow,
Gladys, lives here on Gale St.
Harold's uncle Walter's son,
Laurence, farms adjoining
land. Mrs. Walter Becket
(Carrie) lives in the Lanham
apartments.
Ruby Becket is also from
pioneer families. She was born
in Lexington, but grew up near
Ritter. The Beckets have a
daughter, Sharon Burkenbine.

princess in 1928 when Inez
Hayes Gentry was Queen. She
has done much volunteer work
with P.T.A., the town library,
the Health Association and the
County Fair. She was the last
Girl Scout leader in Heppner,
and for 20 years was Grand
Deputy for the Order of
Rainbow. She has been a
leader in O.E.S. and in the
Bookworms for years.
The Becket home is on N.
Court St., and they are known
for their pretty yard and for
the big vegetable garden
which has included a tre
mendous variety of fruits and
vegetables and sunflowers

for 17 years. He has bought
some of Harold's equipment
