The game sent Heppner to a 1-10 season mark. The Mustangs fell back of the quick and sharp shooting Tiger Scots in the first period and didn't climb out. HHS trailed by quarter scores of 15-10, 38-26, and 62-47 before the final buzzer stopped a 23-14 fourth period tally. Despite the lopsided loss, Heppner head mentor, Chris Borgen, was happy with the game. Borgen said it was one of Heppner's better games this season and the first time they have scored more than 60 points. Dennis Peck led Mustang scorers with 16 points, all but a field goal coming in the second half. Peck was followed by Wayne Seitz with 12 and Ken Grieb with ten. Kim Sams sparked WM with 20 points and Tere King added 19. Doug Warner had 16 and Charlie Alford, ten. Heppner canned 25 of 74 attempts from the field, the best this year, at 35 per cent. Heppner faces Umatilla here Friday and Sherman County there on Saturday. Stefani bangs 28 points, but Cards lose, 71-68 Dennis Stefani canned 13 of 24 shots from the field Friday to pace lone with 28 points, but the Cardinals fell in the waning seconds to Umapine, 71-68. The Cards took the offensive to Umapine early in the game. After a period, lone led 17-16 and at halftime, the lead was still one point at 31-30. Stefani scored nine points in the third period and the Cardinals added another point to their edge, 51-49, but the decisive fourth period spelled defeat. In that quarter, Jerry Hahn, one scares AA Condon, 49-45 The score books still list both games as losses, but lone Cardinal Coach Del LaRue is looking at last weekend differently. LaRue called the back-to-back, three and four point margins, "encouraging," and said it was Ione's "best weekend" this season. The Cards dropped a Friday tilt to Umapine, falling in the last minutes of the fourth period, 71-68. They followed that with a 49-45 loss at the hands of bigger, AA Condon. lone put a score into the Blue Devils Saturday, keeping the pace into the fourth period. LaRue said his hardwood squad tired in the second half, where they were outscored, 27-23. Robin LaRue paced the Cards with 16 points and sparked the team to a 22-22 halftime draw. LaRue hit eight of 17 field goal ; attempts for 47 per cent. Condon was warmer from the court than the Cards. The Blue Devils, led by Brian Harris' 12 points, hit 22 of 53 fielders. lone canned 20 of 64 shots for 31 per cent. LaRue was the key to Ione's offense, grabbing seven rebounds along with the performance through the hoop. Kevin McCabe also had seven rebounds, but the usual double figure scorer was held to two points in the contest. Dennis Stefani, Ione's leading scorer this season, and McCabe, were cut short of their usual game nights. Hahn scored 18 points in the tilt, 16 of those split between the third and fourth stanzas. Stefani 's shooting propelled lone to their best field goal percentage of the season. The Cards hit 29 of 76 tries for 38 per cent, while Umapine was 29 for 70 for 41 per cent. lone made 10 of 18 free throws and Umapine canned 13 of 26 attempts for the three point final margin. Stefani led all scorers, fol lowed for lone by Kevin McCabe with 13 and Ashley A II A I McCabe with ten. After Hahn for Umapine, Brian Key had 16 and Joe Estes and Tim Peck each had 13 points. McCabe led on the boards, too, pulling down 12 rebounds. Dennis Thompson and Danny McElligott each had seven caroms. Martin, who scored 23 points against Arlington last week, hit for 24 this week. He was followed by Ralph Morter, who lone Coach Jerry Martin also cited for his efforts on the boards. Leslie Thompson and Shawn LaRue had two and Gregg Rietmann one to round out the lone scoring. Ione's B team fell to Her miston, 29-26. John Murray paced lone with eight points. JVs whip Blazers Heppner's Mustang junior varsity overcame late minute turnovers and slipped past Oregon Trail Friday, 43-40, but Weston-McEwen powder ed them in the following night's clash, 70-36. Against Oregon Trail, Hep pner used a strong second period to take a 22-15 halftime lead. The Blazers hacked the lead to one at the end of three periods, however, and it took a strong fourth quarter to hold back the OT rally. In the final period, Dave Piper, playing his best game of the season, scored nine of his game high 17 points to boost the Mustangs into the lead. Oregon Trail had a shot at the win with less than a minute to play, but turnovers plagued both teams and when the wrestling was over, Hep pner had the ball.
