Heppner hit 20 field goals to Pilot Rock's 18, but the free throw line performance mar red the effort. From the charity stripe, Heppner con nected on 10 of 22 tries while Pilot Rock had 16 fall out of 25. Connor led all scorers for the Rockettes, with 17. J. Weinke had 13, Cathy Ward had nine, Catherine Doherty added eight and Cid Hamilton had five. Mollahan, who raced for many of her points on fast break, hit 46 per cent of 13 field goal attempts, canning six. Edmundson hit 45 per cent, nailing five of 11 tries. Heppner led most of the way, holding a quarter edge of 12-3 and 17-13 at halftime. But in the third period, Pendleton outscored Heppner 16-11 and took a one point edge, 29-28. The contest see-sawed Jim Launer and John Bier combined for 25 points, but it wasn't enough last week, as Heppner's eighth graders dropped a 38-33 contest to Pilot Rock. Heppner's eighth grade girls downed a previously through the fourth period until Pendleton gained the 37-36 edge. Heppner came down the court and turned the ball over five times in the last two minutes before setting up the shot that fell too late. Maureen Healy paced the Fillies with 12 points, followed by Wendy Meyers with eight, Vicki Edmundson with seven, unbeaten Pilot Rock girls' team. Score and statistics were not available by press time. Launer scored 14 to pace Heppner's Ponies and Bier added 11. Both men worked under the boards and came up with good shots. Launer hit 56 per cent and Bier 54 per cent of their shots from the field. Launer also grabbed nine rebounds. The loss, which knocked the Ponies to 0-3 on the year, was lost at the free throw line. From the field, Heppner out scored PR, 30-26, but at the line, Heppner was three for 11 while Pilot Rook hit 12 of 20. Tony Currin had six points and Rick Cole added two for Heppner. f f . Pilot Rock ruined Hep pner's hopes of an undefeated junior varsity girls' squad Monday, bouncing the Hal Whitaker-coached JVs, 45-26. The Fillies never were in the ball game. Fitzpatrick dumped in 25 points for Pilot Rock, to pace the winners, who took a 10-2 first period lead and just strengthened it throughout the contest. Jana Steagall led Heppner with 12 points, eight of those in the second period. Heppner fell behind, 10-2, after one period and trailed by eight at halftime, too, 21-13. PR outscored the Fillies, 12-6, in the third to take a 33-19 edge, and then coasted home with the 12-7 fourth period tally. Fitzpatrick was devastating in the first half, counting seven field goals and five free throws for 19 of her game high points. When Fitzpatrick cooled to six points in the second half, Dogherty and Weinke came on with nine each, both scor ing eight points each in the second half. After Steagall, Julie Grieb had six, Geri Grieb had four, and Vicki Marlin and Pilot Rock's Weinke scored two points for Heppner. PR had 18 field goals to Heppner's 11. Second half onslaught blows It started off bad and didn't get any better. Madras outscored Heppner, 48-17, in the second half, to earn an 87-39 non-conference victory clash Saturday. The Mustangs never were in the ball game. Madras jumped out to an 18-10 first period lead, strengthened to 17 points by halftime, 39-22, then blew Heppner out of the gym in the second half. All 12 men on the Madras roster scored. Fiala led all scoring with 17 and Dupont added four. Mark Piper stayed consist ent, scoring 11 points to lead the Mustangs. Randy Warden added nine, followed by Curtis Sweek and Dave Piper with six each, Bob Miller with five and Howard Huddleston with two.
