Farm-City
banquet
draws 200
Farm, business
persons honored
More than 200 persons stuffed into the
Heppner Elks Lodge last Friday night to
honor city and county award winners in the
Farm-City Banquet.
The evening affair topped off an all day
Morrow County Livestock Growers Associa
tion meeting. ,
Many of the awards were already public
before the night's presentations. Bert Huff,
vice president of First National Bank of
Oregon, was the guest speaker. (See
additional story.)
Honored during the evening ceremonies
were Gary Grieb, Cattleman of the Year;
Tom and Roy Martin. Conservationists of the
Year: Jean Bennett, a special award from the
Morrow County Cowbelles as past president:
and numerous 4-H and FFA carcass awards.
The Heppner-Morrow County Chamber of
Commerce honored Dewey West for con
tinued community service in the area of
Boardman's pol"""1 development. They also
honored Jim Rogers for his role in the West of
Willow restaurant construction, which was in
the category of business improvement.
Harold Peck was also honored as the
county's best grain exhibitor at the state fair.

Boardman councilman praised
"I just don't know." is all
Dewey West could say when
questioned about his second
award for community service
since 19458.
"I don't know who was on
the committee, nor what the
award is really for aside from
community service. But most
of all. I don't know why I got it
because there are so many
others more deserving."
A Friday night banquet of
the East Central Oregon
Association of Counties
awarded West with another
public service award. Not only
was it his second such honor,
it was also the second time he
was not present to receive it.
"This happened in 1968
when I got the same award, I
had to be somewhere then to,"
said West.
Prior to his 14 years as
mayor of Boardman, West
served for 14 years on the citv
