Young Cards
face Spray
Youill Save more thsmt
"It would be a heck of a
junior varsity squad is what it
would be," lone Coach Del
LaRue said this week of his
young, inexperienced Cardin
als. lone faces Spray Friday and
Mt. Vernon on Saturday.
LaRue is making no winning
predictions concerning either.
The Cards, like on the grid
iron, are what LaRue terms a
"victim of circumstance."
The circumstance is simple.
The Cards are young, too
young to be contenders in a
tough Big Sky Conference.
Eleven men are sitting on
the varsity roster. Two of
those, freshmen Todd Sherer
and Terry Starr, will be
suiting up with the varsity, but
will be playing full time JV.
The starting positions for
Spray could come from "any
of the other nine."
"We're at the point," LaRue
explained, "where I could flip
ten coins. The five guys that
come up heads could star ."
He listed to tentative starting
list.
While the Cards are short
(the tallest man, junior Rick
Gilbert, is 6-1), they do have
some quickness which LaRue
says he'll rely heavily on.
Quickness, pressing, try to
fast break, and making good
use of the jumping ability they
have are all part of LaRue's
game plan. He said a couple of
his players had a 25 inch
jump-reach.
The best leaper on the squad
is Kevin McCabe, a standout
sophomore running back. At
5-8, McCabe can put a couple
of inches of hand over the rim,
but he's the only man on the
team that can touch it.
lone will work with a 1-3-1
offense against both a man-toman
or a zone defense. Their
defense will be man-to-man
with a zone press.
Hoping his club will mature
fast, LaRue said he thinks the
year will be interesting and
fun.
The stint of Cardinal ex
perience stops after the name
McCabe. Both Kevin, and
senior brother Ashley, are the
only Cards with any varsity
basketball experience.
LaRue's roster lists fresh
men Todd Sherer 5-10, Terry
Starr 5-8, Dennis Stefani 5-7
and Robin LaRue 5-10. From
the sophomore class, Kevin
McCabe is 5-8, Danny Mc
Elligott 5-, John Lindstrom
6-0, and Scott Sherer 5-7.
The junior class consists of
Dennis Thompson 5-10, Rick
Gilbert 6-1, and the lone senior
is Ashley McCabe, standing
5-7.
Tall freshmen
open Friday
Dale Holland is eyeing a tall
freshmen hoop squad this
season in anticipation of their
season opener with Riverside
here today at 6 p.m.
Holland has narrowed his
starling five list to seven that .
includes some height as well
as quickness.
Vying for spots on Holland's
frosh squad will be Dale
Holland, a 6-1 center and quick
Lee McCarl. pushing the five
foot mark. At 5-2, Holland said
McCarl is "possibly the best
ball handler" on the squad.
Joining that unmatched duo
could be Jim Parker, 5-11
forward: Steve Marlatt. 6-1
forward; Jody Marlatt. 57
guard, and Larry Palmer. 57
guard.
Holland w ill be looking at all
16 of his freshmen players.
He'll be looking for good
defense and watching his
team play set up basketball.
Holland said that the good
shot and rebounding would go
hand in hand and with his
squad's height, they should
work fine.
Holland said any weakness
that the Mustang frosh might
have would be in inexperience
and ball handling technique.
Other players on the frosh
roster include Mike Jones,
Tim Hedman, Alan Forten
berry. Tim Jones. Dan Nix.
... Chris Zita, Troy Borst, Tom
Dilhke and Perry Wilson.
An injured Eric Clow is ex
pected to help the team later
in the season.
