Ione's unbeaten gridders
finished up a fine season this
year with a 6-0 record, in
cluding a pair of shutout
victories.
The gridders, coached by
Jerry Martin, have compiled a
15-3-1 record over the last two
years. They haven't lost a
game in two seasons.
Down the line, lone has
pummelled its competition.
They have outscored their
foes, 181-40. That's an average
win of 30-7. Pretty impressive.
The seventh and eighth
graders busted Arlington in
their opener, 28-0. After that,
they clobbered Heppner, 32-12
and Oregon Trail, 21-6. Their
closest contest came against
Riverside, but they pulled that
one out, 18-14.
It was smooth sailing from
there, rocketing Wasco Coun
ty 32-0 and blitzing a hapless
Condon unit in their finale,
60-8.

The Heppner Fillies, a much improved basketball unit,
despite a second place showing last season, figure on winning
the district title this winter.
With a good nucleus of five seniors. Joined by four juniors
and three sophomores, the Fillies are hoping to blast their
competition in the Columbia Basin Conference eastern
division.
The girls, coached by Rebecca Randall, will battle with
Oregon Trail, Umatilla, Weston-McEwen, and Pilot Rock in
the east division. In the west, Sherman County is the favorite
against Riverside, Wasco County and Condon.
Randall told the Heppner-Morrow County Chamber of
Commerce Monday that the team had a "lot of potential.
We're tall and quick," she said, "and can shoot. We could be
district champs real easy."
Optimistically. Randall does look at a roster filled with
good average height, but nobody with exceptional size.
Wendy Meyers, a basketball enthusiast, is the tallest girl in
the squad. She is a 5-7 sophomore. According to Randall, it
will be hard to keep her out of the starting line-up.
Five girls measure at S-6, including two of the five seniors.
Darla Cooper, most valuable player in volleyball, and Deb
Holland, both stand 5 Other seniors include Vicki
Edmundson, a sharp shooter at $-4; Guy Kenny, good
outside shot at 5-5; and Teresa Peck, a hustling learner at $-4.
Janice Healy represents the junior height at 5-. followed
by Diane Holland and Lori Rhea at 5 5 and Shelley Thompson

at 5-3.
Myers leads a tall sophomore unit. Along with her, Jackie
Mollahan is 5 5 and Maureen Healy, 5 6.
Randall is a staunch believer in aggressiveness. She said
that any "loose ball, we're gonna get."
She listed, after one week of practice, Meyers, Kenny and
Mollahan as three of the bent shots.
"We're going to surprise a few this year." Randall said,
noting that the Fillies could go with a man-to man defense
more than last year.
"We're quicker." Randall said, "and quickness is going to
do it."
The Fillies open their season with a clash at Boardinan
against Riverside on Ivc. 2
There will also be a junior varsity ronter since 30 girls
turned out for the hardwood court.
