, "I think we did better than
most people expected of us
this year," said Mustang head
coach John Sporseen of the
third place effort.
Indeed, lleppner was not
highly regarded entering the
campaign. But led by their
first year mentor, the Mus
tangs ripped off five straight
victories to launch the season.
Back-to-back setbacks to
Umatilla (8 0) and Sherman
01) were the only roadblocks
to an otherwise perfect mark.
Karl Christman hauled in
two touchdown passes from
quarterback Jerry Cutsforth
nd Bruce Young caught one

another to spearhead the
onslaught over Wasco.
Cutsforth connected with
Christman on a 28 yard aerial
strike early in the going for
the contest's first score. Jim

stanza and Wayne Seitx grab
bed an eight yard TD toss
from Young later in the

defense, said he was pleased
with his club's spirit and
enthusiasm and feels the win
ning momentum could carry
over into next season.
"The kids stayed up for it
and played well," he said. The
win should give us some
momentum for next year plus
it gives our seniors a good
feeling going out Naturally,
we're pleased."
Christman, who finished'
the game with five receptions
for 122 yards, hauled in a
14 yard pass from Cutsforth
to begin the second half. Mark
Parker added the PAT.

Sporseen, who is assisted in
the coaching department by
Dale Conklin and George
Koffler, enjoyed great success
for his first season in the CBC,
generally regarded as one of
the state's toughest A classifi
cation circuits.
The Mustangs shared first
place with Umatilla for over
half the season. They beat
Condon, Pilot Rock, Oregon
Trail, Riverside and Weston
McEwen to open the season.
Then came the hard-fought
losses to Sherman and Umatil
la before they closed with
whitewashings over Pendle
ton's JV's and Wasco County.

Fiesta Bowl resounded with applause as Verna
Brinda finished her third game. The 120 average
bowler had rolled a 216 game, 96 pins over her average.
It was Verna's first 200 game. She received her
Bicentennial 200 patch from the league and a 200 pin
from the bowling lane.
Another 200 game was bowled the same evening with
Doris Flynn rolling a 211. She also was awarded her 200
patch.
Central Market took 3 from Gardner's Men's Wear
despite Verna's high game for Gardner's. Central took
honors for high team game with a 952 and high team
series with a 2671.
Coast to Coast won 3 from Fiesta Bowl and
Peterson's Jewelry took 3 from Morrow County Grain
Growers. Peterson's retained first place by '4 a game.

Francisco, last week. .The
BMCC livestock judging team
won second place, missing
first by two points. That dis

College of Kansas.
The team placed well in all
divisions, according to Paul
Davis, advisor, but excelled in
the horse judging competition.
Deanne Forester of Terre
bone was third high individual
among 60 contestants in the
horse division. Other team

-5289 through -6285. Lot codes
are stamped in the back of
each box. Boxes may have the
brand names of Federal,
Revelation, Wards or Hia
watha. Shooters who have this
ammunition should call 800

Service, Federal Cartridge,
Anoka. MN 55303, for proper
disposition and refund infor
mation. The case heads of a small
number of these cartridges
may separate on firing, re
sulting in a jammed rifle and
possible injury from escaping
gas. Although no serious
injury has been reported, they
should not be used.
Only a fraction of one per
cent of the several million
cartridges and unprimed
cases produced are suspect.
But just to be on the safe side,
check those lot codes.

It's called the "consolation"
championship.
And Heppner High School's
highly-touted volleyball team
gets some consolation after
grabbing fourth place at the
district volleyball tournament
last Saturday at Pendleton's
Blue Mountain Community
College.
"Heppner was the toughest
team we played this year,"
admitted Oregon Trail coach
Kenna Punches after the state
playoff bound Blazers defeat
ed the Mustangs 15-11, 15-11
in first round action.
Heppner went on undefeat
ed the rest of the way but had
to settle for fourth place.
"They're tough," said Pun
ches of Heppner which finish
ed undefeated during regular
season play.
The Mustangs, coached by
Rebecca Randall, continued in
district action with consec
utive victories over Umatilla
and Weston-McEwen.
They got past the Vikings
15- 13 and 15-13 and disposed
of the Tiger-Scots 15-5 and
16- 14 for fourth.
Oregon Trail, which advan
ces to Portland with a perfect
15-0 mark, slipped by River
side and Sherman for the
district crown.
Helix defeated Riverside
for third place.
Heppner volleyball pro
gram looks promising in the
future. Combined with the
varsity's outstanding 76 per
formance, the Mustang Jay
vees, under coach Michell
Portmann, had a season rec
ord of 6-3 with high scorer for
the year Wendy Meyers with
42 points.
"Good spirit and teamwork
was the key to the winning
season," explained Portmann.
And even the junior JVs,
which wound up with a 2-5
overall mark, figure heavily in
the program, says Portmann.
