Heppner's Future Farmers
of America have been busy in
more ways than one the last
couple weeks.
On Saturday, October 16,
Heppner's FFA Chapter trav
eled to Portland to compete in
the livestock judging contest
at the Pacific International
livestock Exposition.
A team composed of three
members represented Hep
pner in the contest. These
members were selected to
judge, based on participation
in the summer's judging
contests and other activities.
. The members who com
prised the team were: Cindy
Dougherty, Krynn Robinson,
and Ken Grieb. Altogether,
the team judged six classes of
livestock, two each of the
following: beef, sheep, and
swine.
High scorer on the team was
Dougherty with 250 points,
followed by Robinson with 245
Student
appointed
Shannon Kelly, sophomore
music major from Heppner,
has been appointed Chief
Justice of the Blue Mountain
Community College Student
Court, it was announced
today.
The appointment was made
by student body President
Scott Madison of Echo. Also
named to the court were two
Pendleton students and one
from Baker.

Kansas City, here they come. The Heppner
delegation of Future Farmers of America
leaves here, Kansas City bound, November 6,
not scheduled to return until November 14.
Chapter officers will be representing the
Heppner FFA. The honored three are Cindy
Dougherty, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry

Traveling by Greyhound bus, the group
reports that they will attend lecture sessions,
guided tours, and visit various points of

County Fair.
Tim is past president of the
Heppner FFA Chapter and
has been actively Involved in
the FFA. Tim's steer was an
Angus-Simmental cross and
had a dressing percentage of
70.2. Tim will receive a cash
award of $80.
Four other Heppner FFA
members will receive a Steer
of Merit Award. To qualify for
Steer of Merit, a beef animal
must meet certain set re
quirements. This program is
sponsored by the Morrow
County Livestock Growers.
Members receiving this
award are: Daly, Krynn
Robinson, Wade West, and Bill
Van Schoiack.
All cash awards and Steer of
Merit awards will be pre
sented on December 10 at the
annual meeting of the Morrow
County Livestock, Growers
Association.
The Heppner FFA Chapter
was honored recently by the
visitation of two State FFA
officers, Pete Thorpe, State
Vice-President from Turner.
OR, and Marie Stevens, State
Secretary from Gervis, OR.
The two State officers spoke
to both the Vocational Agri
cultural classes of Heppner
High School and the 8th grad
ers of Heppner Junior High.
In the promotion of the FFA,
the State FFA officers tour all
the schools in Oregon and
explain the goals, activities,
and accomplishments of the
FFA organization. The two
State officers arrived on Oc
tober 19 and were hosted by
Ken Grieb and Krynn Robin
son. On October 21, eleven mem
bers of the Heppner's FFA

Chapter traveled to Pendleton
for the district meeting of the
Blue Mountain FFA District.
Business on hand involved
the Greenhand and Chapter
Farmer Initiation and the
District FFA Creed Speaking
Contest. The district was hon
ored by the presence of the
State FFA officers.
Heppner had 10 members
initiated as Greenhands. They
were: JoLynn Daly, Marie
Van Schoiack, Todd Harrison.
Ron Schwartz, Terry Toll,
Chris Riddle, Alan Forten
berry, Mike Jones, Coleman
Devine, and Larry Palmer.
Competing in the Creed
Heppner woman
Madge Hanks Bryant, 84,
died at her home on the corner
of South Court and Cannon
Streets in Heppner on No
vember 1. She was born
August 4, 1892, at Hillsville,
VA, and came here about 1914.
Many remember Madge
during the years she worked
as a sales person at Case
Furniture and then at Norah's
Dress Shop, where she sold
and did alterations. Madge
was a skilled seamstress. She
enjoyed flower gardening.
Madge was the youngest of
nine children and was the last
survivor.
She is survived by one son,
Heppner insurance man, How
ard Bryant, and two grand
children, Robert Bryant, Se
attle, and Sharon Seeger,
Pendleton. Their father,
Madge's son Earl, preceded

Speaking Contest from Hep
pner was Todd Harrison.
The State FFA officers
presented the pins to the
Greenhands and Chapter
Farmers. They were also the
official judges for the Creed
Speaking Contest.
On October 9, three mem
bers of the Two Trackers 4-H
Club traveled to Portland, OR,
to compete in the 4-H Horse
Judging Contest at the Pacific
International Livestock Expo
sition. Members Judged five clas
ses, giving one set of written
reasons and one set of oral
reasons. The three members
his mother in death in 1958.
Robert has two sons and
Sharon has two daughters and
a son.
Funeral services were Wed
nesday, November 3. at 2 p.m.
at the United Methodist
Church with the Rev. Steven
Tollefson officiating. The or
ganist was Pauline Miller.
Vault interment was at the
Heppner Masonic Cemetery.
Sweeney Mortuary was in
charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Bryant was a member
of Ruth Chapter No. 32 Order
of the Eastern Star and of the
Heppner United Methodist
Church.
Active bearers were Floyd
Jones, Gene Pierce, Dean
Gilman, Ralph Beamer. Dr.
L.D. Tibbies and E.E. Dick.
Honorary bearers were Nor
man Florence, G.E. Nikander

the death of Raymond Reid,
Albuquerque, NM, formerly of
Heppner.
Funeral services will be
today, Thursday, November 4,
at the Tabor Funeral Home,
Bend. OR.
