Sophomore students in Mor
row County three high
schools will be taking the
General Aptitude Test Battery
beginning this week.
School counselors, VI Lan
ham at Heppner High, Gordon
Meyers at lone High and Mike
Wetherell at Riverside High,
are in charge of administering
the tests.
The tests assess students'
individual potential abilities to
perform specified physical
and mental activities. With
the assistance of their school
FFA slaves
raise $1654
A total of 57 bodies were sold
as slaves last week in the first
annual Heppner High School
Future Farmers of America
Slave Auction.
' The group raised $1,654.50 in
the sale. One advisor, Hal
Whitaker, and 56 students
were auctioned off to the
highest bidder for an eight
hour work day.
The junior class had the
highest average per student
sales, but it was the younger
freshmen class that earned
the most total money for the
FFA. With the money, the
FFA chapter will hold ban
quets, and be able to attend
state and national conventions
and Judging competition.
The freshmen, with 26
slaves, sold for $692 for a
$26.63 average. The U sopho
mores went for $305 and a
$27.73 average. The junior
class, numbering 15, sold for
$500 and a $33 33 average. The
four seniors went for $117 and
a $29 average.

. American Legion Auxiliary,
lone, will be serving dinner
November 2 from U : 30 to 1 : 30
p.m. Also from 5 to 7 p.m. at
the Legion Hall.
Pie and coffee will be served
all day.
Articles for the gift shop for
the veterans' Christmas gifts
are to be brought to the dinner
on November 2. Gifts can be
for ill ages, however, no glass
articles will be accepted. The
articles will be Christmas gift
wrapped and will be taken to
the Veterans' Hospital in
Portland, by the Legion Auxil
iary. Mrs. Gordon (Maravrne)
White Is home after a stay In
the hospital and would enjoy
having company.
Mr. and Mrs. John Jepsen
and family were In Athena last
weekend, visiting Mr. and
Mrs. Gene Hodgson and fam
ily. The United Church of Christ
youth group had a dinner and
meeting at the church on
Monday evening. October
25th. The following officers
were elected: president,
Debra Palmer; vice presi
dent. Glen Krebs; secretary,
Arleta Aldrich; sgt.-et-arms,
Terry Starr. They will meet
the' fourth Monday of the
month with a I o'clock dinner,
with a meeting and enter
tainment following. All high
school student are cordially

The Bunchgrass Rebekah
Lu held their food sale at
the Grarge Hall on October
, 21st, with pinochle party
following. Priies were won
by: high. Norma Rea; 2nd
high, Ola Rute. Heppner;

dred pinochle, Alice McCabe,

counselors, students use the
test results to help them,
identify the types of career in
which they have potential for
success.
Under the direction of the
Oregon State Employment
Service, the Morrow County
School District is partici
pating in a norming study for
a new system for scoring the
GATB. A requirement of the
study is that the ethnic and
minority composition of the
sample group be noted. Stu
dents will be requested to
persons sold was $28.50. The
high bid went for Sam Myers,
sold for $50 to his father, Jerry
Myers.
Morrow County Grain
Growers and Orville Cutsforth
shared the big bidders spot,
each spending $155 on FFA
slaves. Cutsforth's high bid
was $35, spent on Bruce
Young, junior; Chris Zita,
freshman; Jack Yocom, jun
ior. MCGG's high bid of $30 each
bought Jacki Mollahan, soph
omore, and Cindy Dougherty,
junior.
Other high bidders included
Terry Thompson, $90; Bill
Kenny, $90; Jerry Dougherty,
$82.
The FFA chapter expressed
their appreciation to all bid
ders for their support They
also thanked Gary Grieb,
auctioneer for the evening
auction.
Virginia Whitaker purchas
ed her husband, Hal, FFA
advisor, for a full day's work
at $40.
at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Pete Crawford in Portland.
Her daughter, Jean, came
home with her and spent a few
days.
Mr. and Mrs. Bert Akers
spent a couple of days In
Portland last week, on a
business trip.
Mr. and Mrs. Pat Thornton
of Salem spent the weekend
visiting her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Mike Matthews. Denice
Matthews also came over
from Stanfield for a few hours'
visit.
Mr. Eldon Tucker spent the
weekend in the valley. He
visited his sister, Mr. and Mrs.
Got dan Ross at Canby, then
went on to Salem and visited
his brother, Edwin Tucker,
and family.
Mr. and Mrs. Art Bailey of
Milwaukee, spent the weekend
at the home of Beecher
Emert. Most of their time was
Uken up with visiting friends
here. Art and Betty were
owners of the Tavern a
number of years ago.
Mr. and Mrs. John Riet
mann from Eastern Washing
ton State College at Cheney,
WA, and Joe Rietmann from
Oregon State University at
Corvallis, spent the weekend
at the home of their parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Bob Rietmann.
Word has been received that
Mrs. Vlda Heliker Is getting
along fine and has been moved
to a rehabilitation center to
help her walking. Her new

Memorial Services for Mrs.

Mrs. Ea HamleU arrived
home from Portland on Satur
day evening. Mrs. Swanson

County Extension Ser
vice and set up for

Thursday. Sack lunches
are asked.
After the tour, pas
sengers will be dropped
off in Portland for an
afternoon downtown to
shop or browse.
