Heppner rolled past the first
of iU big three opponents
Thursday, slapping a favored
Weston-McEwen, 21-6, on the
Tiger Scot turf.
The Mustangs were the
underdogs according to many
papers and were picked to
drop their first contest and
continue in a tie for second
with Weston-McEwen at 4-1.
But it was not to be.
The Mustangs were without
their starting quarterback and
fullback, but still "pounded" a
smaller Tiger-Scot squad.
While Steve McLaughlin
filled in brilliantly in the
backfield, Jim Kenny was
pacing a stingy defensive unit
to their fifth win in as many
outinfls.
McLaughlin, who has been
sharing the backfield respons
ibilities with Tom Skow, got
most of the action when Skow
was ill last week.
The senior thundered for 138
yards on 17 carries, including
a 60 yard touchdown jaunt that
broke any Tiger-Scot bubble
that was still inflated.
Small and aggressive Jim
Kenny shut off the outside WM
attack and proved that he
"was ready to play football for
us," according to Dale Conk
lin, assistant coach.
Kenny, a Junior defender,
had four unassisted tackles,
nine assists, dumped the
passer once and had one inter
ception. Right next to Kenny
was Brian Marlin. Marlin had
one unassisted, was in on
seven assists and came up
with three interceptions. One
was nullified by a penalty.
The Mustang defense stop

Heppncr's junior varsity
football team slugged out a
gruelling, double overtime
victory over Oregon Trail
Monday, bringing their season
record to 4-1.
Dennis Peck scored from 30
yards out in the fourth period
to tie the ball game after
regulation, 6-6. Two more
Peck TDs proved the triumph,

Oregon Trail scored first In
the opening period, but failed
on their point after try. They
scored on their first try in
overtime as did Heppner on a
six yard run by Peck.
The Mustangs held OT in
their second attempt and sent
Peck across from six yards
out for the win.
No Individual offensive or
team stats were available.
Defensively, Don McEwen,
Sam Myers and Steve Marlatt

little more total yardage,
Heppner's turnover policy
more than thwarted any WM
drive.
The longest drive came in
the second period after the
Mustangs had scored. The
Tiger-Scots moved the ball
down the field and were inside

Winless Cards thumped
before being slapped with an
illegal procedure penalty on
fourth down.
Mustang coach John Spor
seen said Heppner just
"pounded" Weston-McEwen
and "hit harder."
Sporseen called the goal line
stand in the second period the
turning point.
Heppner scored the first
touchdown after a 16 play, 65
yard, time consuming drive.
McLaughlin, who scored all
three TDs, ripped four yards
to top the drive.
The second Mustang score,
which put them ahead at the
end of the third period, 14-0,
was set up by a Bruce Young
pass to Wayne Seitz. The 44
yard counter was made up at
half time in the dressing room.
Young, who was three for
eight, hit Seitz with the bomb,
threading the pass into his
outstretched arms.
Weston-McEwen came up
with their lone score in the
fourth period on a long pass of
about 45 yards when Charlie
Alfred escaped Mustang deep
backs and skipped into the end
zone with the pass from Kim
Sams.
McLaughlin topped his
night's work off with a first
down run. The trek went 60
yards, but McLaughlin had to
use second effort to get to
paydirt. He was hit at the
seven yard line, busted that
tackle and fell into the end
zone with another WM de
fender on his back for the
score.
McLaughlin was the leading
ground gainer, keeping a 4.8
yard average. Young passed
for 63 yards. The Mustang
total offense was just 223
yards.
Christman received one
pass for 10 yards, aiding his
reception average to 27.5.
Dale Holland's average
moved to 26 yards per re
ception though he failed to
catch a pass Thursday.
Seitz had two catches for 53
yards.
McLaughlin and Kenny
shared the Player of the Week
honors this week.

Ione's winless season re

tone fell in two straight
games in the varsity tile,
dropping the first game 7-15
and the second, 10-15. Despite
the loss, Martha McEUigott
came up with five points to
pace lone.
In the junior varsity action,
Janet and Martha McEUigott
each scored seven points in a
losing cause. The JVs dropped
their clash, 11-15 and M5.
The loss was detrimental to
the Cards and Gordon Myers,
lone coach, blasted the Culver
coaching staff for running up
the score.
lone trailed 36-6 at halftime
and 50-6 by the end of the third
period, yet there were only
three players other than
starting Culver backs that
touched the ball for the Bull
dogs offensively.
Those three racked up only
13 yards, a scant amount of
Culver's total 502 yards.
Myers was disturbed and ad
mittedly angry at Culver
coaches for the action they
took.
"We must have had them
scared with our ten fresh
men," Myers said, noting that
even on the final series.
Culver's starting quarterback
was in the backfield and run
ning with the football.
Culver outweighed Ione's
front line by almost 50 pounds
per man. "We tried to the
end," Myers said, "but it's
just frustrating to get pound
ed, pounded, pounded, con
sistently...! just disgusting.
A guy like that should quit
coaching."
The bright spot tor the
Cards was the consistent
punting effort of McCabe. He
booted the ball seven times for
318 yards and kept up a 45
yard average.
For the Cards, the only
score came in the first period
when Stefani hit Robin La Rue
and La Rue pitched to McCabe
for the 22 vard run.
