3:58.4 minute mark
The 1976 harvest festival,
the 5th annual event, will be
highlighted once again by the
Northwest Watermlon Pitch
ing contest.
This grudging, pain staking
event matches teams of three
competitors, vying for time
that it takes to load a truck
with melons over a 100 yard
course.
The melons are spaced
every three feet, so a total of
100 melons have to be lilted,
tossed to one man then to
another who is stacking them
in the truck.
summer.
Along with the pitching,
there are two other melon
related contest. One sets the
big mouths of the area, trying
to scarf down melon In the
melon eating contest.
Last year contests for the
juniors and seniors were held.
John Zembliski won the junior
contest, coming out looking
more vegetable than human
with his wet, red coat. Arley
Hamilton a high school stu
dent emerged from the senior
division as the winner.

assessed the team for each
melon dropped and for each
melon broken in the effort of
loading.
Last year's winners, the
only team entered, Walchi's,
set the course record of 3:43.3
minutes but penalty seconds
shoved that time up to 3:58.4,
still an impressive clocking.
Last year's Walchi team
consisted of James and Bob
Walchli and Vic Aichele. Poor
weather conditions forced
many growers to be harvest

event but officials are expect
ing a bigger turnout this
Melanie Rayner and Lori
Schnell tried their eating
habits out on the melon. Time
will tell if this year's court
plans to take part.
Another melon contest, the
seed spitting contests, brought
not only prizes, but cheers,
jeers and plenty of laughter
last year.
It also returns as a contest.
The big as well as the small
have the same amount of skill
and luck Involved. A good
pucker and pew-too-week, the
seed files and is marked.
It looks like another fun
weekend.
