"After 30 years, something should have developed," Tom
Simonton, Pendleton mail carrier and window painter said.
Simonton was in Heppner Tuesday and Wednesday,
painting window fronts for the Morrow County fair and
rodeo.
He started the extra trade about 30 years ago in Pendleton.
He was painting store banners for the old Penny Wise Drugs
and a man came up and asked him to paint a picture on the
window for the Round-Up.
"A guy across the street saw it and asked me to paint his
window and it just grew," Simonton said.
For many years, another man painted the windows in
Heppner but for the last three years, after the old timers
disappeared, Simonton has been painting.
He credits his Heppner painting to Susan Jepsen, a school
mate in Pendleton years ago. She talked him into working
here.
"I just do the ones that are lined up, but it gets bigger every
year," he said. He said the ideas "just come to him" when he
paints.
His paintings are mostly cartoons, adding a rodeo and
business together to bring out the cartoon. At Turner, Van
Marter and Bryant, the cartoon shows La Verne Van Marter
in his wheel chair, roping a steer.
At Peterson's Jewelry, it shows a bashful cowboy giving a
cowgirl a ring with a crackerjacks box held behind his back.
The windows take about 20-30 minutes for him to complete.
Take a look.
