Fair board
'quiet' now
The Marty Davis show will highlight this year's Morrow
County Fair days on Wednesday, August 25, the second
annual Family Fun Night.
Davis, a country -western singer who has made many
appearances in the Pendleton area, is the first name
entertainment the fair has ever had.
Davis, a young down-to-earth entertainer, will sing with his
band and do comic routines. A dance will follow.
The fair board is "quiet right now," according to Liz
Curtis, Secretary. An August 11 meeting has been slated to
get the ball rolling for the opening of the county fair, August
24.
The fair will run Tuesday through Thursday, Aug. 24-27.
The rodeo will follow from Aug. 27-29.
among special fair activities planned this year are a 4-H
Public Style Revenue, slated for Tuesday night; a children's
pet show., Thursday; 4-H and FFA Livestock auction, Thurs
day night; and an open class horse show, Friday.
The carnival will run Tuesday through Thursday and
tickets are now on sale through the Heppner Lions Club.
A new exhibit has been added to this year's fair. A
commercial potato exhibit, with D.O. Nelson as superinten
dent, has been added. It is similar to commercial wheat
growers exhibits.
The commercial entrant must have three acres or more.
The exhibit will be 50 pounds of potatoes. There will be cash
prizes for first, second and third and a champion exhibit
special ribbon.
The lot for the entries will be Norgold Russets, Netted Gem
Russets or others.
According to Curtis, Morrow County's Fair wheat exhibit is
among the best in the state, "due in large part to the work
Bill Rawlins has done."
Curtis said another "good exhibit" is expected if "harvest
isn't too late."
Along with regular awards, a list of special awards, listed
on page 10 of the premium books, will be awarded to the best
exhibits in departments.
Among those awards will be in beef from Sabre Farms,
sheep from Western Empire, Poultry and Rabbits from
Sabre Farms, Potatoes from Blue Mt. Potato Council, Other
Commercial Crops from Sabre Farms;
Fruits and Vegetables from John and Ann Prag, Flowers
from Heppner Garden Club, Home Economics from Eastern
Oregon Farms, Arts, Crafts and Collections from Oregon
Potato Incorporates, Children's Corner from Lindsay Ranch,
and Teen Corner from J-S Ranch.

LaWanda Lindsey is one of
those rare people whose re
cording and stage personality
produce an identical excite
ment. Her enthusiasm for her
career and her audiences and
for life in general reaches out
and it's highly contagious! She
will perform in Heppner, Aug.
14 at the court dance.
LaWsnda has been per
forming professionally since
sh was five, as a featured
singer with her father's band,
the Dixie Showboys. She
credits her mother snd espec
ially her father with starting
her in music. "They travelled
with me a great deal when 1
was younger and have always
encouraged me." That parent:
al devotion and belief has paid
off for LaWanda for even as a
child, she exhibited a degree
of professionalism thst is
usually seen in more seasoned
and older performers.
She signed with Chart
Records in Nashville when
she was just 14 and on that
label, recorded 21 singles and
4 albums including a duet,,
album and 4 singles with
Kenny Vernon. The duo is
best known for their rendition
of Wild Mountain Berries a
song which did very well for
them. She's since moved to
Bakersfield snd has singed

Marty Davis began his
career in entertainment as a
disk jockey in 1964. After
playing records day in and
day out, he decided he could
do better. . .he can.
Marty and a few friends
organized a group and, in
spite of themselves, began
working various weekend
gigs in Southern Oregon
Northern California area.
Their popularity ballooned
and they decided to take that
fateful step; in 1969 the Marty
Davis Show went on the road.
Since those beginnings in
1969, Marty has worked with
several groups from Alaska,
Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho,
Washington, California, and
Oregon, to Nevada. . .in Elks
clubs, military bases, night
clubs, and casinos, including
the Golden Nugget in Las
Vegas. . .doing Country
music. Country rock, shows,
dances... and always doing
well!
Correction note
Parade needs band
Jim Wlshart won't say what
this year's Heppner-Morrow
County Chamber of Com
merce float will look like. With
sly grin, he says he wants it
to be a "surprise."
The theme for this year'a
parade Is "We've Come A
Long Way." The all volunteer
worked float will be the first
float In a few years for the
Chamber of Commerce.
The float will be entered in
the Umatilla County Fair this
week and possibly in both the
Boardman Harvest Festival
Parade and the Pendleton
Round Up Dress Up parade.
