joined part of the group
looking at a steep grade
where many tracks had been
found.
He brought along a larger
German Sheperd dog. As soon
as the dog had gotten to the
crew, it began to get restless.
It whined and whimpered and
jumped up to its master's side
for protection. It's owner said
"something's wrong" and took
the dog back to his rig.
On a road, not more than a
month old, built by loggers,
fresh tracks were found. One
measured 21 inches long, 10
inches wide at the toes and
five inches wide at the heeL
The impression in the ground
measured one and a half
inches deep.
It crossed a 25 foot road in
three strides. Guy figured the
animal to be running. Earlier
in the brushy timber, he
guessed that the stride while
walking was somewhere be
tween five and seven feet
apart.
On one spot, where a wind
fall had come into the track's
path, it was evident that the
animal had simply stepped
over the five foot high busted
tree. The stride there was
seven feet.
The tracks were easily
identifiable as left and right
feet.
On some mossy rocks in the
creek, hand prints, possible
four times the size of a human
hand were found.
All day Monday the Patter
son's tracked the tracks. On
Tuesday, just one day later,
they went down in the same
area and said they found
tracks that they had not seen
the day before.
"It's a damn good hoax, if
that's what it is," Guy said,
looking at another set of
prints.
City, County
to receive $
The City of Heppner and
Morrow County have each
received money from the
State Highway Division.
The highway division has
distributed $14,017,219.73 in
highway-user funds to 36
Oregon counties during the
period January 1 to June 30.
During the same period, the
highway division has dis
tributed $8,389,498.78 in highway-user
funds to 240 cities in
Oregon.
Heppner received $10,074.10.
The city allocation is based
on the statuatory 12 per cent,
and is distributed monthly as
a result of action taken during
the 1975 legislative session. It
went to 240 incorporated cities
in Oregon whose combined
population now totals
1,334,676.
The county allocation is
based on the statutory 20 per
cent and is also distributed
monthly. Morrow County will
receive $59,786.88.
The funds come from the
following sources: motor ve
hicle registration and opera
tor's license fees, gasoline tax,
use fuel tax, motor carrier
fees, and fines and penalties
collected for violations of the
size and weight statutes from
the citations issued by the
highway division weighmast
ers. The city apportionment is
based on the population of
each city as determined by the
Center for Population Re
search and Census, Portland
State University. The popula
tion figures are as of June 30.
The county allocation is
based on the number of vehi
cles registered in it during
1975.
For the city of Heppner,
with a population of 1600 the
allocation is $10,074.10, com
pared with Umatilla, at 1620,
which receives $10,200.01.
Morrow County, with 2,551,
receives $59,786.88 while in
comparison, Umatilla County
with 17,193 registered vehi
cles, receives $410,506.94.

But no one in his right mind
would travel up and down
that steep canyon making
hundreds of tracks. And. it
doesn't seem possible that a
human would work hard
enough to place the tracks
over miles of ground.
Guv. Frank and Don are
planning to go back into the
woods this weekend, equip
ped with rifles.
Guy said he does not want
to kill the animal if one is
sighted. But, he said, he
doesn't want to find one
without some protection
either.
There are literally hund
reds of tracks in that area,
made by a creature almost
impossible to fathom, with
huge feet and incredible
strides.
The tracks are there. They
are evidence. Whatever made
them. . . no one knows. . .yet
If it is a hoax, it's a good
one.
