, Heppner tankers hit the
water in the third event and
didn't atop stroking to glory
till M events were over and the
Heppner Invitational victory
was deep in their pockets.
; In the first annual Heppner
Invitational, the local naiads
destroyed their three team
competition leading by nearly
100 points at times over their
nearest foe.
I The scoring put Heppner,
which annihilated nine Indivi
dual pool records, In first with
an impressive 476 Mi total.
John Day came from behind to
take the second spot with 417
points, followed by Baker with
375 and Enterprise with 2S3Mi.
Interestingly, John Day, the
last place team, broke the
most Individual pool records
with 14. Baker busted 11 and
Enterprise added five new
marks.
Heppner was paced by eight
Individual first place winners.
Karen Klnny sparked that
group with first place wins in
the 60 meter freestyle and
butterfly and a first in the 120
meter individual medley. Swi
mming In the 11-12 girls group,
Miss Kinny's mark in the IM
was just .08 off the record.
Five other swimmers pick
ed up two firsts each. Dale
Holland's efforts produced
two firsts and two records in
the process. In that 13-14 age
group, HOlland won the 80
meter breaststroke and the own mark set In June of 53.6.

Dale's 51.05 clocking broke his by seven seconds. His time in
that race was 1.51:01.
Little brother Doug did
almost as well, winning two
firsts and setting a mark in
stroke and butterfly; and
Lottie Laughlin in the 11-12 60
meter breaststroke.

Dae Holland set two meet records.

one. Doug broke the 60 meter
breaststroke record for 11-12
year old boys with a 1.00:01
mark, breaking his old mark,
set three weeks ago of 1.03:2.
Holland also won the 60
meter backstroke.
Another individual record
was set by Bryan Kerr in the
13-14 60 meter butterfly. Kerr
swam the distance In 53.04,
more than five seconds quick
er than Todd Alleman of
Hermiston's 58.5, set last
year.
The only other Individual
pace setter was Greg Connor.
Connor, a 9-10 year old, busted
the 30 meter breaststroke
record by about a second.
Shane Laughlin of Heppner set
the old mark last year in 31.09.
Connor Swam the length in
31.09.
Connor also took a first in
the 30 meter butterfly. Other
first place marks came from
Shelly Biddle in the 8 and
under 30 meter freestyle and
breaststrohe; Kelli Bergstrom
in the 9-10 30 meter breast-

with five team records. The
relay teams broke records in
the 9-10 boys 120 meter medley
relay by 17 seconds; in the
11-12 girls, 120 meter medley
by six seconds; the 8 and
under girls 120 meter freestyle
by 21 seconds ; the 8 and under
boys, 120 meter medley relay
by 55 seconds; and the 9-10
boys 120 meter freestyle relay
by 10 seconds.

'Now we're going for the big one," Doug Sams, Heppner
swim coach said Monday, after his tanker squad ripped three
other teams for first place in the Heppner Invitational
Sunday.
The invitational win was "great," Sams said, but now the
team is eyeing a second district championship.
The district "B" meet will be held Saturday in Pendleton
and Sams has maintained all summer that Heppner will win
" Last year Heppner won the event with 25 kids swimming,
Sams said. . .
'Now we have 42 swimming and we're better swimmers
this year." he said. "We should win it . . . I m positive.
The kids got psyched up for the meet yesterday, Sams
said of Sunday's triumph. Sams said other coaches were
impressed by the Heppner teams improvement.
More than 40 swimmers will hit the water Saturday in an
attempt to equal last year's victory against "B" teams from
LaGrande, Milton Freewater. John Day, Enterprise,
Pendleton. Hermiston, Baker and The Dalles.
The "A" meet will also take place Sunday and some
Heppner relays and a couple individuals will compete in that
In a "B" meet, there are no relay events so some Hoppner
relay squads will compete in the "A" meet Sunday.
Over the
tee cup
A Vocal ladies fun day will be held on
Tuenday, August 3. The day will Include
holes of golf and a noon luncheon. Coffee and
rolls at I a m., tee off at 8:30. All local ladies
interested in playing ars welcome.
In ladies play last Tuesday a.m. the special
award of ths day went to partners Eddie Skow
and Pat Lankford. A vliltor from Springfield,
Jo Stein, won least putts. In evening play
Harriet Evans was low net winner.
Ladles tee off time for morning play Is 8. 30
and 5 p m. for the evening players.
Men's play was held on Saturday morning
because of the visitation lo Echo on Sunday.
Saturday winners Included John Edmundson
with low gross and a tie between Chris Borgen
and Norm Kickert for low net. Borgr-n also
won long drive honors. Elmer Sams had the
KP on No. 3 and Dave Harrison had least
putts.
Only a small group of locals braved the heat
to play at Echo last Sunday. The host club was
most gracious providing carts for all to ride.
Charlie Rawlins wss the big winner with low
gross, long drive and KP. John Edmundson
won second low gross and Dave Harrison had
low net. There was a tie between Doug
Gunderson and Ed Hiemstra for second low
net.
A barbecue Is planned for 4 p m. on Sunday
so plan to attend and enjoy the afternotwi of
activities.
