La Verne Van Marter, Sr.
It was a big weekend for the local golfers
with men's play on Saturday morning and a
flag tournament at 4 p.m. On Sunday the
locals visited Kinzua for a full day of play.
La Verne Van Marter. Sr. was honored by
the Club at the afternoon play on Saturday for
his years of service and participation in club
activities. It's great to see Van playing again
after an illness and playing very well. He not
only won the flag tournament but was
presented a scrapbook of pictures and signed
by members of WCCC. During the barbecue
he also was given a decorated cake.
In the flag tournament a player was given
the course strokes plus half of his handicap
strokes. The object was to go as far on this
given number of strikes as possible. Van went
nearly 13 holes, 2 holes farther than the
nearest competitor. Ted Toll was second,
getting to the third hole. Third went to Jim
Wishart, fourth Neil Parks and Ed Heimstra
was fifth. Bob Jepsen had the long drive and
KP was won by Doug Gunderson.
Pat Edmundson was the winner for the
ladies, beating out Dee Cribble by inches.
Marie McQuarrie was third, Hazel Mahoney
fourth and Rosemary Parks was fifth. Trish
Toll had the long drive.
Saturday morning play saw two men as
double winners. Lowell Gribble had low gross
at 64 and also the KP. Low net was a tie
between Ed Hiemstra and Jerry Daggett.
Daggett also won long drive. Craig Cooley
had the least putts with 26.
A large group of players from Heppner,
Condon and Kinzua were in Kinzua Sunday
and following are the local winners. First low
gross, Charlie Rawlins, second Neil Parks
and John Edmundson was third. Allen Nistad
had low net followed by Lowell Gribble, Ed

Ahfini Old Roscoe. one shot Roscoe. You know, one time he
was working for Bob Thompson, Old Roscoe and his two
dogs, old dogs were always with him.
One time Bob took a couple of green herders and there
green dogs and headed for Joseph to bring home a band of
ewe Iambs. "You know", said Roscoe. "he was going to bring
them home with those green herders and I didn't think he
could do it." So Roscoe says "you better take me along." But
Bob said "You do what I have you doing, you finish that and
I'll get along." Old Roscoe hurried and finished what he was
doing and he worried about Bob and the green herders and
that band of ewe lambs. It took him two days to finish what he
was doing and he took his two dogs and struck out a foot over
the mountains to meet Bob Thompson, the green herders, the
green dogs and the ewe Iambs. Well, he walked to meet those
dogs and those sheep and he met that band of lambs at
Enterprise, 12 miles from Joseph. It took him 2 days to walk
the 120 miles. His dogs were foot sore, Roscoe wasn't, and the
green herders were sure glad to see htm.
Yep, Old Roscoe could do
the impossible.
